I have a tremendous bloom of green algae in my 45 gal. tank. I used AlgaeFix for 2 days according to instructions but it killed all my snails and all but one of my loaches and the other fish were not happy either. So I changed most of the water but now algae is back with a vengence. Not only on glass which I clean but the water itself is like pea soup & I can barely see to back of tank.

Does anyone know how to control this algae without harming fish or plants?

Help please!

Thanks,
Edgar

did you put your tank close to the window with plenty of sunlight? did the sunlight gets to your tank most of the time? if yes, then it's the problem, try to stay away from the light.

alternatively, you can use the UV sterilizer to kill the algae cells.

hopes it gives you some ideas.

Yup, I agree with ikanmas. Try to cover up your tank from excess light. A UV sterilizer definitely will work, but isn't so cheap.

Also you can test your water on the nitrates anything above the 20 ppm mark will make the algae grow faster. Also make sure that your filter media is clean no brown gunk. If you can you can find a filter pad that is a thicker white sheet it does wonders on picking up the aglae in the tank. Make sure like the others above said that its not getting direct sunlight biggrin.gif

Pet store recommended Phospate removal pad and also something called Velvet Guard which is for something else but which they said also kills algae. Anyone know anything about using these products?

Thanks,
Edgar
