Finally put my first fish into my tank yesterday, a gorgeous orange and white comet, who's name is...... hmmm, still thinking about that one... yestersday was my birthday,so maybe something to remind me of the day... I'll announce the name when inspiration hits me! smile.gif
Anyways, I bought freeze dried bloodworms.... are they a good supplement? I will try peas and some lettuce too. Should I blanch the peas first, especially if they are frozen? and then break them up a bit before offering them to the fish? Also, how often should I feed them vegetable matter? couple times a week and use the flake food/bloodworm combination the rest of the time? I am really looking forward to adding the other fish to my new 55 gallon. A lovely blue Shubunkin is next to arrive in a weeks time

Are you kidding???? goldies LOVE LOVE LOVE bloodworms. Mine act like sharks and make the tank a churning feeding frenzy. They also take bites and shake their heads side to side when they tear chunks off!!!! It's very amusing. Feed peas once a week, with no skins, heat them just till they're warm and then de-skin 'em wav.gif

Thanks for the advice! Going to give my comet some bloodworms now and see how he reacts to them smile.gif Good tip about skinning the peas too. I guess the shell would be harder for them to digest

My Fishes went berserk when I feed them dried bllodworm... They LOVE it and this goes to prove they have taste bud..

But do take note about worms, for they may be infested with bacteria that might be deadly to fishes, thus I got processed n deinfected dreid blood worms... but dried worms cause the water to be messy thus usually the last meal before I change water...

Peas shld be used once or twice weekly or whenever there is a need to release constipation (judge yourself).. I thaw the peas and remove the skin.. Over heating may cook the pea which will destroy the nutrients and even cause the pea to become powder (clouds water).. I cut the peas into smaller size to make it more digestable for the fishes too..

When using dried food or flakes or pellets, bear in mind to pre-soaked the food with water from tank before feeding to prevent bloating..

In any cases of bloating or constipation, introduce peas or simply fast the fishes.. Fishes can go without food up to a week, so dun worry...

actually my Freeze dried blood worms pack says:

Safe and convenient.. interpets range of freeze dried natural foods will add variety to your fish's diet, without the risk of disease normally associated with feeding live food.

If it was live then probably would be a chance of carrying disease but when things die there is a number of time before all bad bacteria die off hence it becomes safe.

At least I should hope so! LOL

I tried this with both goldfish and tropicals and both love them smile.gif

Put a handful of frozen green peas in a cup of water for a few seconds and the shells will pop right off. The fish cannot eat the shells, so it's better and cleaner for the tank this way. No need to cook the peas, they are soft and vitamin rich. Do not use canned peas, not as vitamin rich. Just throw in the shelled peas as they are.

Frozen bloodworms and other frozen products are most definately the goldfish's favorite, better than dried anyday. Frozen bloodworms, krill, brine shrimp, etc. are all pasturized and pure with no chance of disease. They carry no germs. Live food that would be threatening would be earthworms perhaps out of your yard, crickets you found, something you can't be sure of. Buy Hikari brand if you can. HTH, Love Karen

Hee hee, we just fed our fish freeze dried bloodworms for the first time yesterday. I wasn't awake when she fed 'em, but my girlfriend was disgusted at how quickly they scarfed those things down! She said that not a single worm fell to the bottom of the tank as both fish ate every single one up by the time they got halfway down the tank! smile.gif

I just wish the buggers could get as interested in veggies as they do the worms. No luck with them eating anything but peas in the vegetable kingdom yet.

Just wanted to share with you guys...I fed my two goldies frozen bloodworms for the 1st time (that I had them, or they never eaten that before at the lsf, who knows?) last week, and they went berserk!!! And for some strange reason they started showing spawning/flirting (?) behaviour while eating the worms, i.e. chasing each other's bum etc. Never seen that before this. Sigh...they are just so cute! smile.gif
