Full Version: Any Tropical Tanks Out There?

My roommate has a tropical tank and it's been cloudy for weeks. I've tested for nitrates and they were in toxic range. I've been doing daily 25% water changes and most fish seem okay. The water quality is some improved.

I put a zebra in a hospital tank b/c she had some strange symptoms which have advanced:

puffy red gills, unsteady/circular and inverted swimming, floating on top or resting on bottom most of time. I'm not aware whether she has eaten. This has gone on for at least 3 days. Can't seem to diagnose this. I thought it might be nitrate poisoning b/c I almost killed one of my orandas a few months back as he had some of the same symptoms. Fortunately for me he recovered and I have been much more vigilant.

The Zebra looks a little better in terms of red gills, but we're wondering how long to let this go on and/or whether there is something else we could do.

I am using Melafix. Stress coat. 2 gal container w/mini BioWheel and a heater set at about 78 deg.

Thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi, I'm not too sure but it might be your nitrIte levels. nitrAte isn't the problem check nitrite. Also how long has the tank been established, & how many fish do you have in the tank?
