What causes the water in the tank to turn green? Or at least LOOK green? No slimey stuff or anything.. just green water.
Kingyo
Algae! There are different types of algae, some prefer to grow attached to surfaces and others (diatoms) grow suspended in the water. Good light and excess of phosphate and nitrate will cause green water.

Hmm... So is this green algae harmful? I mean.. I can't see my goldies in the tank unless they're near the sides.
koko
Nope wont hurt the fish at all. Most likely your getting excessive light from the sun or to much light in the day time. This kind of algae isn't harmful actually it benefits the colors in the fish just looks bad to use. As long as all the other parts of the water are fine your fine smile.gif

Ahh how frustrating though! My 2 males have their tubercles, and my calico fantail that's female has an enlarged belly.. What happens if she lays eggs? I won't SEE them through the green water! lol.GIF

While green water is unsightly to most people is does greatly benefit the fishes color and sometimes even finnage. This is why when I get my outdoor ponds set up I wont mind green water. Also it would help to conceal my fish from the many predators in my area which include foxes, red tailed hawks, bald eagles, raccoons and many other birds of prey and predators.(Dragonflies are also very abundant in my area.)

Do dragonflies eat fry? I thought they were flying insect eaters. I never thought of that! We have some dragonflies that are 6 inches plus across. I expect they could eat a whole fish!
Kingyo
Actually, dragonfly larvae (nymph) are more dangerous than dragonflies... they live underwater and prey on small animals (insects, fry, etc). I used to catch them when I was a kid, they are really cool!

What they eat:
Dragonfly Nymphs are predators and feed mostly on other insects in the water. Sometimes, they can be cannibals and eat each other. Some of the larger species have been known to feed on small fish and tadpoles.

Oh good. I was hoping I did not have to "not like" dragonflies. They are SO pretty!
