These koi are about 6 or 7 months old. I can't keep all of them, I have 8 in the house and theres I think 4 or 5 in the pond (poor things but they refused to come in the house). I am going to find good homes for them though, if I can't I'll just have to figure out some way to keep them. I'm glad you all like them, they aren't show koi but they are cute in their own way.
Here is what these guys looked like just after they hatched.
I know not the greatest picture in the world (yet again). But here is a great site on koi spawning. It's interesting and has some good pictures as well.
Experimental SpawningLachfa, they were hatched in my wiskey barrel LOL, soon after they hatched I fished them out with a fine net and brought them in the house. They were soooo tine when I brough them in, I was worried that the water in the barrel might get too hot for them.
Andrea, I believe scoliosis is genetic. From what I understand most of the koi are born or hatched with deformities. These little fry normally wont make it. Of course, I stepped in and helped out these less fortunate guys by bringining them in the house. I hope that my deformed fry don't have to be put to sleep, that is sad, I do have one that seems to have a tilted mouth, where the joint of the mouth sort of tilts inward (is that what was wrong with yours?). I hope the little guy doesn't get so bad that he can't eat. I honestly don't think these deformed koi will be able to eat koi pellets, I've been feeding them brine shrimp. In the spring I am going to find out though, I am going to put them in their own little pond and see how they do. If they do alright I'll give them away. The ones that can't eat the pellets will have to come back in the house and live in the fish tank.
