Ok, I have an Apple Snail that likes to ride the waves! Every so often, I will look in and find him just floating around on the top having a grand old time. (Of course, I think he's dead, and can't do anything to get him to grab on to anything) After a day or so when I am convinced that he must me dead Thud.gif , I'll look in and he'll be crawling around the tank as if nothing had happened.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal? Is there something wrong?

Please let me know what you think about this behavior.

Thanks!

i have that problem with all my pest snails. i think they just enjoy the ride. whenever i try and sitck them back on they take themselves off again and risk the rapids so i think they are just thrill seakers!

It's my understanding they might do this if they are stressed. In the wild, if conditions are bad, they float until they sense conditions have improved, then they settle down again.

Sometimes they will float if they die. The way to tell is to pick them up and smell them. A live snail is for the most part 100% odorless. If there's any kind of foul smell, it's most likely dead.

Thanks for both your responses,

Pelvis, That's what I was worried about. But the other three snails don't do this. just the Big Apple Snail "Johnathon". Macintosh, the smaller Apple Snail and Fred and Wilma the Golden Snails don't do this.

I did take him out and put him in a tank by himself the last time that I thought he was dead and now he's crawling again. I did smell him and he smelled fine.

snails frequtly become inactive 4 days.

if ur snail was dead he woldn't still be in it's shell because when they die there muscle that keeps them in its shell loosens so they slide out.

Snails just do this. ur snail is fine! biggrin.gif

My snails float from time to time. Dani's (my golden cana) favorite thing to do is sit on the bubble bar and float to the top, drift around for a bit, sink and then do it all over again. Sometimes she'll do it for a couple hours biggrin.gif

Hi "Captain",and welcome to Koko's. smile.gif Just want to mention the fact that you're responding to a post made back in 2004. We try to tell people not to post on something that's over two months old.It gets a little confusing when people start bringing up posts a couple of years old, smile.gif
