Full Version: Another Question Am I Feeding Them Properly

I never thought how different foods can effect them so much before I got here. I've had tropicals forever and they always did well on just flakes.

For my goldfish I first give them their flakes since there easiest to eat for my new little fantail. I've also switched to a smaller pellet for him/her. I drop them in after they have most of the flakes gone. When I give them the (left over) blood worms it's just an extra snack so it really varies from 3 times a week to one time a week. Should I just cut them out if it's not constant? Would it hurt them if I gave it to them 3 times a week always? I'm afriad it maybe to much proten for them even though it's not much.

Also when I was feeding the bigger pellets I use to soak them but not the small ones as there so tiny but I read below they should be soaked. Will it hurt them not being soaked? Even Fanny(the fan tail biggrin.gif ) eats them easily.

I'm going to start giving them a few peas a week(and skip the pellets that meal) to give them some more variety.

Yes, yes I'm a worry wort about my fish tongue.gif So please be patent with me if it seems I'm asking many questions that seem simple or maybe I already know and double checking. I guess I have to be doing something right. Bubbas grown at least 5 inches since I got him last year.

Blood worms are very good for fish so I'd continue feeding them.
If your pellets are sinking ones then there is no need to soak unless your fish is already predisposed to swimbladder problems. If however they are floating ones, continue to soak them or change to a sinking variety.

Jewell, the deal with the pellets is that they will expand after they get into the water, and if the fish swallows them fast enough, the pellet doesn't have the chance to expand in the tank, it will do that in the fishies intestines, and thats where an underlying problem is. When the pellets swells up in the fishies body, it takes up more space than it would if it swells up in the tank, since the fish sort of squishes the food with his mouth before swallowing, so it would get the swollen up pellet smaller. Since the pellet didn't have the chance to get squished into smaller pieces when its swelling up in the fish itself, it is a big clump basically sitting there and expanding the intestines, therefore pressing on other organs, mainly the swimbladder. It takes a while for the pellet to be digested, and during that time the big fat pellet interferes with the function of the swimbladder. So, if that happens often enough, you can imagine what effect it has for the swim bladder.
I generally soak all my food (I feed only sinking pellets, together with other frozen and home made food), except for Progold, that falls apart just looking at it.....biggrin.gif
