My tank water is a lite green color. Can any one tell me why? The water is not dirty, just green. I have live plants in it and do a 25-30% water change on Sunday. Whats UP?

I'm EXTREMELY far from being an expert, but sounds like you have free floating algae. Some things to consider... do you feed your fish only what they can consume in a few minutes? do you feed them too often? Do you turn your lights off at night? What kind of light do you have? Do you have an algae eater(Pleco)? Whats your pH?...
Just some questions to consider until someone with the proper knowlege can answer your question tongue.gif

Sorry, it took me so long to get back to you. I feed them only once a day and the other tank twice. I have started feeding twice and the water is clean now. Can any one tell me why? The only thing differnce is the feed is up to two times a day, just like the tank without the live plants.

Is your tank sitting close to a window with a lot of light coming in? Thats another major source of free floating algae... smile.gif

No, its by the wall. I turn the light off at night too. I don't know why the water truned green, but now it is OK. Thanks for the help.

I have this same problem with green water. I try to limit the light just to feeding times, but it seems to be getting worse. The parameters are fine. Any idea how I can get rid of this without chemicals?

I'm having the same issue.

My tank isn't near a window, lights off at night, food once a day, all eaten in under 5 minutes. I have 4 oto catfish with the 6 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank (the fish are small so they're not overcrowded. I'm very aware of that issue.) No live plants, water stats are all perfect - just the water keeps getting VERY green within a week of a water change with what appear to be free floating particles.

It was so bad that I did a total water change last week. I know! ignore.gif Not something I would EVER do normally but it's really bad. Couldn't even see my fish! Filter is working fine and there's no build up of algae on the glass.

Any and all ideas on how to deal with this are MOST welcome and very needed. THanks!!

What are the filters on this tank?

How's your pH? Higher pH promotes green algae, so I assume it would be the same for free floating algae too. You could try a pH decreaser or some other solution to reduce the pH. Baking soda? Anyone?

Hope this helped in some small way smile.gif
