My new fish has weird white bumps/spots on his/her pectoral fins. The bumps are very small and only on one edge. They are not anywhere else that I have seen. The tank ph is 7 the tankis 7 years old and the affected fish is just as happy as can be with no ill effects. What are these spot/bumps?

Hi Fishface,

Do these bumps look like little grains of salt scattered on the fins, or more like cotton wool tufts? Did they appear suddenly or gradually? Do any of the other fish in the tank have these bumps anywhere? What are the ammonia, nitrite an nitrate levels?
FishFace
Well the one fish is the only one with these "apparitions", the tank is 10 gallons (only temporary...) and they are not tufty and they are smaller than salt grains but otherwise the same. I don't kbow the levels of ammonia nitrate and nitrite because my test kit is missing and I need to get a new one. As soon as I can I will get a new test kit. The other fish is fine and the affected one is fine except for the spotish things.

Hm, these *might* be the start of ich, but then again could be just lumps and bumps which occur from time to time in growing fins. One of my fish gets these occasionally on his tail when he's going through a growth-spurt.

I would just keep a close on them for now; if any more spots appear then it is likely to be ich, in which case treat with higher tank temperature and salt. If not, then the bumps should disappear over time. smile.gif

Thanks for the advice!

Gosh, I didn't know breeding stars could also appear on the pectoral fins... I thought they just appeared on the gill plates and cheeks. Well, that's a new thing learned thanks to Bob! biggrin.gif

Guess Bob could be a Bobbi?! lol.GIF

i have never heard this anywhere but, my comet (lurch) is almost 4 years old and has never grown stars/spurs but, hes got a couple on his dorsal fin ray! they showed up at about 2-3 years of age. have any of you seen this anywhere else? it just seems odd. blink.gif

Well I gues my three boys are just weird since they all have them hehehmn.gif

Most male goldfish when they are ready for breeding will do this they dont show them normally till its time biggrin.gif

koko,

i didnt mean i had never heard of spurs on the pecs. i just meant that i had never heard of spurs showing up on the dorsal.(if thats what you were meaning on your last post) biggrin.gif
koko
Oh sorry spit.gif I was going to fast to read the whole post.....Sorry about that ohmy.gif

I havent heard of this but I think JS said shes seen them on other parts of her fish once......Not to sure. but I could be that at one time your fish might have bent his dorsal and this will leave a white mark on the fin.

i thought about that too, but, there are several of them. they also dont look exactly like the ones that grow on the gill flaps. they have more of a ribbed effect to them. just on the leading edge of the dorsal ray. mainly near the lower half.
