Yesterday, I fed my fish some smushed up peas. When they would suck the peas into their mouth, they would spit it right back out, and then do the same thing over again. How do I get them to keep it into their mouth. Will they finally swallow it?

Are they doing that with just the peas, or all of their food?

did you remember to boil it and take off the skin?

Peas well. Maybe your fish don't like peas, remember you have to boil and take the peas out of the soft shell. If your fish still spits it out, try a different fresh food. If your goldfish are doing this with all there flakes/pellets/ or just food in general. Try getting a different brand of food.

All goldfish have sifferent tastes, maybe yours just don't like the peas. Heh, despite the countless reccomendation for ProGold on this site, my goldfish still spit it out, disgusted!

I fed them some banana yesterday and they spit that out also. They will eat there flakes, but flakes aren't the best food for them.

Try feeding something like tubifex worms.

jdude you can buy them at your lfs in the frozen food case. You could also try bloodworms and brine shrimp. Make sure to dissolve the portion you want to feed before adding it to the tank. Oh and turn off the filter to or you'll have flying food.

I'm surprised your guys don't like peas thats the first time I've read that a goldie didn't like them. You could give them spriulina flakes too.

Maybe the pieces are just too big. My fish spit out there shrimpo pellets if they are not small enough. Then after the pellets soften up a bit they eat them.

How long was the food in the tank before they tried it?

They tried it at once and then spit it out. Then they ate it 20 min later

I'm not an expert in the feeding department,
but I take my frozen peas and place about 6
on a microwave safe plate and nuke the peas
for about 20 seconds, squeeze the inside out
of the cover and cut each one into about 10
pieces and feed them with a pair of small
tweezers. They love to come to the top and
take the pea from the tweezers. BTW I use
6 peas for 10 goldies.
Also, be sure to soak all of your pellets
for about 10 minutes before you give them
to your goldies.

i usually boil mine
i peel the skin off and break them roughly into halfs or quarter
then i sort of let them cool a bit and lastly throw them in
the goldies love it
