ammonia level 0
nitrate 0
nitrite 20
tank size 55 gal
4 fish

I just bought two new fish about a week ago (a blue oranda and an orange oranda). The larger blue oranda has worried me since i brought him home and I meant to ask about it much sooner but my computer has gone haywire. He stays to the bottem in the corner or behind a plant and he has a red spot on his tailfin. His scales are starting to stick out now. Im very worried about him. What can I do to help the poor little guy?

oh, and he had white spots on his wen too. I figured it was just growing when i first brought him home but could that also be part of the problem?

Scales sticking out are usually the last signs of dropsy. Try putting some
Maracyn II in the tank to clear up the possible fungus and red streaks and then put some epsom salt in the tank. 1/8 of a teaspoon dissolved in a cup of water first. Do not pour it directly on the fish. The epsom salt aids in swelling which is what is making the scales stick out. Posting a pic would be a great help. Thanks.

I would definitely isolate this guy in a separate tank. Bacterial infections can spread quickly and you dont want to have to treat the whole tank. Quarantining new fish is a MUST… but I wont go into that now.

Are you sure his scales are up? Ive noticed that a lot of times on blue fish, their scales are dark at the bottom and silvery at the tips, making them almost have the apperance of protruding. Anyway, just check and make sure that theyre raised. I would treat him with a Maracyn/Maracyn II combo. If it is dropsy, its not likely to be curable at this stage but you can certainly try to save him. Medigold woudl be great to have too, because that will treat from the inside. Good luck.
