My fry tank has been slowly going green over the last 2 weeks. I have let it so far because I have heard that green water is good for fry as they can get nurtition throught the day as they want. However, I am leaving for vacation in a week and my grandma will be feeding and monitoring the tanks while I am gone. The fry will be about 3 1/2 months old. There is a light amount of green algae on the glass, but its the free floating stuff that I'm undecided on keeping or removing.
I have been going back and forth over should I leave the tank green, or work on getting rid of the algae. I see benefits to both sides, and not so benefits.
Pros on keeping it green:
Fry have ready snacks while I am gone, since that will be getting fewer meals.
the algae eats up some of the nitrates and would keep them lower for the 13 days that there will be no waterhanges.
Pros on clearing it:
Easier for my grandma to do a fish and equipment check. (right now its hard to see the bubbles)
IF there was an equipment malfunction, less chance of suffocation of the fish overnight.
Easier for all the fry to see the food at feeding time.
Cons on clearing the algae:
it is possible I have let the algae take over (starve out) part of the cycle, and by removing it I would be back to an uncycled tank with no waterchanges for almost 2 weeks.
What would you do in my situation? If I am going to try to remove it I need to start the upped waterchanges by monday to have a good chance at removing most of before the trip.
