Maybe I'm slow and maybe I just don't read as much as I should, but I discovered something that I wanted to share. I can never seem to cut up my gel food small enough for my fancies to want to eat.

Then it came to me. Garlic press. You know, those smasher things that squish the garlic through the little holes? Oh man! That works great!

My monsters eat the 3/4 inch cubes in one bite.
That said - one of the wonders of gel food is that it softened a bit more as it sits in the water - and the fish can sit and nibble on even a very large chunk of it for quite a while. Gel food, fed this way to fry will give them something to nibble on for hours and hours and hours - effectively giving them a continuous feeding.

That was the size of my little ones 6 months ago. Your goldies must look like small whales
Pure hypotheticly: Could it give problems if you use one garlic press as wel for the normal use as for the gell food?

If anything I would think it would make the fish like the food better -- Seachem sells a "palatability enhancer" for medicated fish food made from garlic.
I don't know if I'd like to use the garlic press for
my meal afterward, however. Some of my fishes' favorite batches of gel food just about made me retch to mix up. Liquified blood worms, anyone?

Funny! Out of that inborne, unconscious habit, might I call it, of licking your fingers after getting food on them, I did that accidentally after getting gel food on my finger... it had all the ingredients I mentioned at first, as well as tubifex worms, which I forgot to mention. It was all that split second thinking kind of thing... as soon as I put my finger with the little smear of gel food in my mouth, I immediately thought, ugh!, but then went, well, it's in my mouth now... too late. So, I sort of rolled it around on the tongue just to taste and.... it wasn't horrible... wouldn't eat it again intentionally though! Anyway, I still would get a separate garlic press moreso just to eliminate any possible contamination to the fish if anything. But, yeah, fish really do like garlic... go figure! But seriously... my gf won't bother with the gel food if it's in too big of chunks and it takes so long to cut up the gel food into tiny enough pieces. With the press, you just cut one chunk and, squish! This was a great discovery for me!

I just chop the food into chunks - about 1 inch cubes - and line them up on a cookie sheet and freeze them. After they are frozen, I pour the cubes into ziplock bags and drop them back into the freezer. Each morning, I take out a 1/2 cup or so of cubes and let them sit on the plastic "food sheet" I have designated for fish food. The sheet, when set on the stone counter, thaws the cubes very quickly. The cats do not get them if I leave them next to the sink. When I am done with breakfast and feeding the cats, I chop the cubes up into smaller bits and drop in the appropriate number and sizes into each tank.
I just made about 12 cups today- about 4 week's worth. It has peas, broccoli, Hikari floating food (made sinking), shrimp pellets and bloodworms. Yum.
I did NOT lick my fingers. Ewwwwwwhhhh.......
