Full Version: Pea Substitute?

My goldies, not unlike human children, WILL NOT eat their vegetables. None of them. I've tried everything. Oh, they LOVE fruit, but I think they'd rather starve than eat any veggie. So, my question is, I've been a bad mother, spoiling my children, and I think I've given my ranchu a tiny bit of SBD. It's mild, so I want to get rid of it early. Anyway, so, he's on his 3 day fast, but after that, he's not going to eat his peas. He won't. aint.gif I know you feed peas because it's fiber and cleans out the innards, whereas protein can block the innards. So, would I be wrong in thinking that feeding any fiber would work, i.e., would oranges do the same trick? It's mostly liquid and fiber (they will strip the rind clean sometimes!). If it needs to be veggies, what's the option? I was thinking they might like the frozen spirulina.... post-4056-1113060392.gif

kiwi is a good idea... I've given them kiwi and they didn't quite like it as well as oranges, they're INSANE for oranges, there's nothing they love better than oranges, but they did like the kiwi and eat it... good thought...

Have you tried peaches or plums? I'm not sure if that's quite appropriate for fish. I'm basing this on toddler experience and needing some fiber lol.

What about making a pea-based gel food with goodies like blood worms and krill blended into it? I make my gel food with baby food peas as the base and it seems to help my easily-constipated ryukin to stay regular and not floaty.

Have you tried broccolli ? smile.gif I microwave a frozen floret with a tad of water for about 1 minute, and pick off the little green bits for the goldies biggrin.gif They really like it smile.gif

Also, have you tried gel food? Sometimes you can sneak veggies or other foods in there that they don't like and they'll eat them up smile.gif

I was just looking at peaches the other day and almost bought one wondering if they'd like it. I can try that. Broccoli? NO. I've tried it. They look at me like, "what IS this crap?!" They just don't like veggies. I had one sarassa comet who adored peas; ate 'em like candy, but he was the only one. I've tried straight pea gel food in the past and they kinda turned up their noses at that, but they did pick at it eventually. Maybe if I just used the juice from a soaked protein product and added that for flavor... I can try that too. I just made a big batch of gel food... I guess I'd call it a "bouillabaise" in that it's a mish-mash of a bunch of stuff... it has a dash of ground up pellet fish food, brine shrimp, a jar of banana baby food, a dash of leftover spinach or pea baby food (can't remember which. It's been frozen for a while), but I think it has too much protein for right now.

Weird my fish LOVE vegs but they hate fruits... they will spit them out and never bother to touch them again.

Isn't it wierd how different goldies' tastes can be?! Scoff.gif

My 3 goldies will eat anything that hits the water. I have duckweed that grows like mad in another tank and I put a couple of tablespoonfuls into the GF tank once a week and all the duckweed will be gone in a couple of hours.

Kiwi sound like a good substitute and close enough to orange that they might not object smile.gif
Our gf really, really like their peas Hungry.gif , and there is very little they don't like. The only exception seems to be (seedless) grapes. We gave them a de-skinned grape once, and the shoved it into a corner of the tank and stayed as far away from it as possible hide.gif .

I tried oranges, grapes, and canned longan nothing works...

I should try strawberries... tongue.gif

If you'd like to find pea substitute, maybe try some beans... my gf love it. Or egg yolk (boiled)... but both can be messy so it's best to feed them this when you're about to change water.

Well, as always, gel food is the answer. I shelled some fresh peas and chopped up some spinach. I boiled them in the microwave for a couple of minutes, then put everything in the food processor and creamed everything to a soup. Added the gel and, voila!, it's the brightest, perkiest color of green gel, so fresh looking, aaaaaannd, my fish love it! Just like little kids, you gotta hid the veggies in something else so they'll eat it! lol! Oh, and btw.... they LOVE peaches too! They tore that thing apart when I gave it to them!
