Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank

I'll admit openly that plants are my weak point when it comes to biology....I really don't have much of a clue. I picked these two up today (along with what I believe is a Cabomba), anyone know what they are?

That's pretty much how I view all live plants... my goldies were eating Thomas' amazon sword in the pond. tongue.gif

Are those bulbs on the bottom, or are the roots wrapped in something?
A better pic of the bottom part of the plants would help me with ID.
I don't think the one is an onion plant tho, those have wider leaves that grow inside of each other.
The broader leafed one could be a java fern but I would need a look at the bottom of it to tell. There are a few stem plants with similar looking leaves.

biggrin.gif That's what I figure, but at least they may last a while. My tank's been planted for a few months now, I have what I think is a lacey java fern and that hasn't been destroyed at all (no comment on the other poor plants)

The roots of both plants are wrapped and in metal and what looks like cotton, there are no bulbs. I think one is a java fern, after doing a little reseaerch. I really don't know about the grass looking one though, I'll try and get more pics later.

Java ferns have a chemical in their leaves that supposedly does not taste good to fish. This could be the reason for its survival amongst all the other plants. I said supposedly because when my female gets into her breeding mood, nothing stops her from shredding the plants before hand, even the ferns.

The other possibility for the plant you think is a java fern is cryptocoryne balansae. The crinkled leaves look exactly like the pic in my aquatic plant book. And java fern is usually not sold with a weight attached to the bottom, since the rhizome will sink anyways in water.
