Full Version: Cool Find At The Lfs...

Today I was at the mom and pop LFS and they had a small bucket of bright blue quartz rocks. Each rock was roughly 3-5 inches in diameter and they were bright/royal blue with some white and beige striations. I figured that these would look pretty cool in my goldie tank -- I love the contrast of blue/orange and have a blue background on my tank that really brings out my fishes' colors. The owner of the store said that they only get them in once every few years. I bought two (they were expensive -- $3 per lb). They are soaking in bleach water for the rest of the day, but I will post photos later when I get them into my tank. smile.gif

Sounds pretty!
I had a white quartz type rock in my tank years ago. It was pretty big, but the problem I had was that it would flake apart. I don't think it was true quartz. Post some pics soon pleeeeease biggrin.gif

Those rocks are lovely!! Great find! I thought I would google "blue quartz" and see what type of mineral was contained to turn it blue but came upon this article and thought it would be nice to share........ accordingly your gold fish will be more organized, less depressed and much happier with those stones in their tank......Wait!!! Maybe they will organize more meetings now, like the one you got pics of when showing off your new tank scaper (thought I recognized the photos of your tank). read on.......

Blue Quartz

Alternate Names & Name Spellings: Dumortierite Quartz, sometimes called just Dumortierite

Metaphysical and Healing Properties Lore
Keywords: Peace, Expression

Blue quartz, also called dumortierite, is a stone of order that can enhance organizational abilities, self-discipline, and orderliness. This enhancement is believed to be due to the effect it can have of balancing the throat chakra and enhancing communication between lower chakras (physical) and higher chakras (mental/spiritual). Blue quartz brings this sense of order to all things, and releases fear, bringing courage to one's life. It is also a boost for creativity and expression.

Emotionally, blue quartz greatly reduces problems with scattered mind and disorganization, and brings mental clarity. It also helps one to see and accept reality, and react to it intelligently in one's behalf. It can lift depression and replace it with peace and happiness. It also can help reduce stubbornness, particularly stubbornness that is ultimately bad for one. Blue quartz helps reduce emotional tension.

In the psychic and spiritual realms, blue quartz brings spiritual development, and contact with spirit guides and angels. It can also help you express your spiritual thoughts and dreams. Blue quartz is excellent for peaceful mindfulness or meditation.

Physically, blue quartz can help with cooling the body, throat, thyroid, and parathyroid, detoxification, overstimulation, hyperactivity, spleen, endocrine system, blood.

Blue quartz is associated with the throat chakra, and it enhances communication between the lower and higher chakras.

I don't know about my fish, but I think I need this! And maybe my kids too -- my six year old couldn't keep track of his shoes to save his life. I particularly like "It also can help reduce stubbornness, particularly stubbornness that is ultimately bad for one." I will keep you posted on any psychological/emotional/spiritual break-throughs that take place in my tank...

I am thinking now that maybe they are granite and not quartz. I am no geologist, but the pictures that I see of blue quartz on the internet are much more crystal-like. Does anyone know?

Even if they aren't blue quartz, they are still pretty. But my fish were excited about getting in touch with their spirit guides and clearing their throat chakras...

Quartz can be both crystaline and a more solid/smother type of rock. From your pictures I am pretty sure that they are a quartz. I looked up the quartz to see what mineral was in them to turn them blue incase it was something that could leach into your water.......... Like I have heard Holy Rock will sometimes cause problems (not sure on this though).... good news is I couldn't find any thing "Bad" about blue quartz! Cystaline quartz is more "pretty" to the eye so it is shown off more often is why I think that is the usualy pictures you see of it.

I think they look to blue to be any kind of granite though........ well not natural granite anyway.

You are welcome and it was not a problem............ actually I was kinda thinking that those would look really nice in my tank so the research was partly (okay mostly) for myself. I just had to post the info from that one page because my husband keeps telling me that I have some of the most stubborn fish he has ever seen, and yours hold secret meetings! But that is another story!

Oh I like that it is very pretty.

If you really like them I could look into getting you one and mailing it to you. The lady at the fish store said that they were rare and that they have this rock guy that comes around every few years and sells them a box (but maybe she was just trying to get me to buy and they aren't so hard to find). They also had similar rocks that were red. Let me know. Probably need to do it in the next day or two, because there weren't that many.

I wonder what postage would be????? They are probably fairly rare...... Check out this link.... http://www.mindat.org/min-26723.html# about a 1/4 of the way down the page it gives you a map of where they are mined and there are only 4 places in the world.

How much did yours weigh? Your two peices are what, about 3 pounds? If you happen to remember.

OH Definately the BLUE, they would look nice with my blue glass stones. Check out the current set up of my tank......

Yes, they would look really great in your tank!

The two that I got weigh a total of 6 pounds (I spent $18 on rocks! yikes.gif ). They had them in various sizes. I got one of the bigger ones and one of the smaller ones.

As long as they were mailed super-slow it probably wouldn't cost all that much. The post office has a few flat-rate boxes -- as long as an object fits in the box it goes for the same fee regardless of weight. My dad had like 50 pounds of coins mailed to him in a 8"x10" box -- the mail carrier was not amused. Don't know if these would fit in one of those boxes, however. Let me know your thoughts.

Hmmmmm, my husband would be amused if I paid that much for ROCKS! He already tells me I have rocks in my head for starting up with fish again. I then say "You're right, hun, I must have rocks in my head <<< pauses while he gets this self centered "I'm right" look on his face, anyone with a husband knows that look, and then say >>> that would explain why I married you, wouldn't it".......... Followed by a big kiss! smile.gif

Let me check at my fish tank guy and see if my favorite fishman has any on hand. I have been looking for a reason to go see him anyway. He is a wonderful guy who takes in old/boken tanks and fixes them up to sell again. He claims it is a hobby! He also does custom tank work if you pay him enough........ He is usually good for oddities or hard to come by stuff. I will let you know if not tonight definately tomorrow if you should buy me some more rocks for my head, I mean tank!! smile.gif

OOooPPpppsss..... those weren't your fish having the meeting those were Jeana727's fish......in this thread.... http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...showtopic=70059 . Sorry for the misidentity. Maybe yours will start holding meetings too. (?)

I got the chance to stop by the fishguy and he has some rock that his wife has cut and polished on one side that are almost triangular/pyramid shaped that would look awsome in my tank. She is going to cut me some...... the ones she has at the "shop" (in their garage) are for display and she will get ones the size you want. They are suppose to be 10$ a peice but they never change me "regular" prices. We will have to see when they are ready. And of course pictures will be a must!!
Acupunk
Cool! I will look forward to pictures!
zookey
I am so sorry, where are my manners!! I forgot to thank you for your generous offer to pick me up some of the blue quartz and ship it to me! I appologize for my lack of manners.

Wow! Those are great! That is one thing that I never look at in my LFS is the rocks. I must have a peek next time I go.
