After giving my gang their regular meal of mini-ball staple, wheat germ and pond flake, I gave them some small pieces of quality white bread. Because I have about 40 gf that are 4 to 7 inches in length and about 100 gf between 1 to 3 inches, it takes some doing to make sure the entire range of sizes gets a fair share of food. Those less than 3 inches cannot swallow the mini-balls, so I crush some to tiny bits and mix it with the wheat germ. This usually provides small enough morsels for all the little guys, as does some of the crumbled flake food. Still, the big guys go after everything and dominate the "dining room." This is where the white bread came in. By tearing the bread into, say 1/2 inch, squares, I was able to toss those squares into different areas of the 5 ft by 6 ft feeding area. The little guys would zoom to a spot where the bread hit, getting there much, much faster than the big guys... so much so that I would almost swear they were watching the pieces coming while they were still in the air. As soon as the bread hit, it tended to disintegrate, aided by the hit of multiple little mouths ... a la piranhas. Their activity then would attract a big guy(s) attention, who would gobble up what was left of the bread. By tossing numerous pieces in different areas, I was able to get all of the little guys the first chance at the bread... and they made the most of it.... zipping around with terrific speed.
