Hi Everyone,

I bought a load of trumpet snails to help with my tank, and the greedy largest gold fish appears to have sucked them all out of their shells! Can anyone tell me is this normal?

yep it would NOT be normal for a golfish NOT to put anything that could remotely fit in his mouth ...unfortanatly snails are a good appetiezer for goldies..they will devour anything that may smell ,look or taste like food or for the sake of just doing somthing eating is waht a goldfish does best ...now that they have a taste for it ..it will always be lunch..sorry about your snails ..

Yup, that's normal. Goldies love snails, especially small ones. You can use goldfish for snail population control if (when) the snails start breeding.

RIP snails. I've always wanted a trumpet snail-- I love the shape of their shells.

Maybe you should just stick with the algae scrubber.

Not fair to the poor snails, So I suppose I can't keep trumpet snails now, unless I want them to be dinner!

Ho Hum! trust me to a fish that likes fresh snail on the menu.

This post answered my question, “Do goldfish and koi eat snails?” I acquired a few snails via new plants last fall. This spring they bred like proverbial rabbits, there were egg masses all over the pond. However, I did not see the numbers of small snails I had expected, and eventually there were none, only adults. My neighbor gave me her 10 inch koi (too big for her small pond) and now all the snails are gone. My (much smaller) fish probably could not eat the adult snails, but did clean-up on the young, and now the koi finished the job.

Shoot, I can't even keep big snails in my big tank because Spot is a Snail Addict! He eats snall ones like Popcorn & hunts down big ones and pulls them right outta their shells. It is terrible!

I noticed that goldfish love snails when Godzilla (Jaws couldn't have done it better) attacked Speedy and pulled it clear of the glass. The poor thing didn't survive it.
