does anyone have a planted betta tank? right now i have plastic in there but i really want to transition into plants for his tank....any suggestions? i have a 5g hex with a biowheel filter built into the hood and a flourescent light and has quite a bit of natural light. the tank is fairly close to being completely cycled (YAY!!) so i figured i would do the research now so when its finally all cycled i can start to move real plants in...

I haven't heard of bettas tearing up plants the way that goldfish do... so my uninformed advice is that any aquatic plant should be safe.
The type of plant really depends on the look you're going for, but in a 5 gallon it needs to be one that doesn't grow too large.

java moss, java fern, ribbon plants, bamboo. Bettas are pretty compatible with live plants. You will find you betta will like to seek refuge behind plants and like to rest on the leaves.

One place to order plants online is Ebay LOL

I ordered java moss and duckweed on ebay before, they arrive in great condition

You can find some good prices there too.
