Just bought some of the much-raved about Pro-Gold and fed for the first time. I've been flake/floating pellet feeding and so Fisher and Starbuck were quite confused at first. Took about a nanosecond for them to dive to the gravel. They totally munched down!

Question: When feeding a sinking food how do you know your fish is getting enough (especially in competition with a bigger fish)? Basically just watch during feeding? Should I take some gravel out and have a no-gravel feeding zone?

WOO HOO! my fishies love progold too!

As for how much to feed, some people say however much they can eat in 5 mins, some say about the size of each fish's eye..

The thing with progold is it takes the goldfish a while to chew on it. It also crumbles as it's in the water too, so your idea of having a gravel free feeding zone is a pretty good idea. I usually feed about 1/4 - 1/3 of a teaspoon for my large goldies (5 of them) and then about half of that to my 3 smaller goldies.

I usually feed progold in the mornings and then brine shrimp and bloodworms in the evenings.

The best way to determine how much food to feed them is to check their poop. smile.gif you want nice segmented poop that is of the same color as the food you're feeding them.

For feeding sinking pellets I normally use my redneck feeding platter. :-p

I took a small plastic platter and drilled a small hole in it. Then I tied a length of string onto it. When it is time to feed anything that sinks, I drop in the plate then I use the hose from my gravel vac to drop the food thru onto the plate.

When my fish are done eating I will pull the plate out. Then I can enjoy my gravel without watching the fish nibble thru gravel and without leaving a permanent eye sore in the tank.
