I knew that my kids' elementary school had a garden with a pond, but yesterday we discovered that there were goldfish in it! I had asked the woman who takes care of the garden if they had any fish in the pond, and she didn't think so. Well, there are actually tons of tadpoles, small fish (maybe mosquito fish), and 4 or 5 common goldfish. I reckon that if no one knows they are there, they must not get fed, but have managed to survive just fine. The pond has one little fountain pump that is solar powered. There is lots of algae, and plants.

I took some photos with my cell phone camera.

I just think it's neat that a kids' school has a pond, and that goldfish can survive with so little care!

That is nice. And its a pretty pond. I'll bet some kids or their Mother put those fish in there a long time ago when the novelty of fish keeping wore off or became too much. Its heart warming to see how they can survive.

that is cool, back in germany our school had a pond too! but no goldies i dont think but lots of frogs and tadpoles!! they used it for science projects cuz one thing we had to do was grow tadpoles from frog eggs and then we'd put them back in the pond

In that pond I have seen three comets one all orange and two with white tails. They are really beautiful fish, and they all seem to be really healthy. There is allot of moss and plants on the bottom of the pond so on sunny days all the fish are hiding. peepwallA.gif

Wow, that's awesome that there's a pond at the school! And even better that the fish are alive! smile.gif

We couldn't have something like that at my school because all the teenage hooligans would surely find a way to damage it... glare.gif

The school is for 5-11 year olds, and the kids aren't allowed in the garden without a teacher or parent. And it is locked up behind the school gates at night.

The kids do get to explore science out there, like growing plants from seed, or butterflies from caterpillars. I am going to have to start wandering around there with my daughters more often. smile.gif

What a beautiful pond, and a wonderful thing to have a garden and pond for kids to learn in. You have to believe that the kids are gaining a unique appreciation of the beautiful and fantastic natural world around us. I'm sure those fish have eaten their share of mosquito larvae and other such delicacies, and are doing quite fine!

the pond is beautiful! Wouldn't it be nice if the teachers used it to teach about nature? If I were a kid I would love to go outside on a sunny day and learn about the fish. biggrin.gif

Today I noticed that there are fry in the pond or they might be a type of little gray mosquito eating fish. Whatever they are all the fish in the pond are so cute. The comets still look very healthy. Most of the time the fish our hiding, but sometimes you can see them swimming around or see their tails because they are poking their heads in the plants that are in the pond. fishpond.gif
