(strips or drops?)hagen drop test for ph and nitrite, API drop test for ammonia and tetra drop test for nitrate although it hasnt been working quite right lately, usually the powder dissolves really fast, the last time I used it I gave up trying to dissolve it after 20 minutes and just finished the test like that

Taco has always had really fragile fins and he tears them all the time and they always looks kinda frayed. Recently he's developed some redstreaks in his tail, i know that sometimes its normal in a fish with the light colored flowy fins but i dont think they were there before. Is it something i should b worried about? He also hides behind the canister filter intake alot, he's been doing that for a few weeks now, i think maybe he just likes that spot cuz theres no current and he aint exactly the strongest swimmer cuz he still eats fine and stuff like that.

Hi Shamu -I think we spoke about the Praz-tastic treatment before.

Taco has always had really fragile fins and he tears them all the time and they always looks kinda frayed. He also hides behind the canister filter intake alot, he's been doing that for a few weeks now

I'd say this is typical of a fluke burden. Flukes will tatter the fins badly and a weakened fish will hang where it can avoid the current.

I think you need to continue the treatment for flukes, but follow the directions properly this time. In order to erradicate all the generations you must dose several times with only days in between. I think 2 days on, 3 days off, 2 days on works well, but do whatever your bottle dictates. Very regular water changes and gravel vac'ing are necessary during treament. Once a week will not be effective and I think you need to get on top of things before the fish is overcome.

Providing you are certain there has been no disturbance to the cycle (ammonia or nitrite spikes) then the red streaks could be the early signs of an infection - flukes open the fish up to secondary bacterial infections.

I would start with a massive water change, start raising salt and re-start the Prazi in earnest. If the streaks fade, just continue as started - but if they appear to worsen you may need to feed med-food in addition.

Remember to be very thorough in washing hands and sterilizing equipment between tanks.

ok so i'll try to do the prazi treatment every day but if i cant keep up with that since i gotta clean other tanks and do schoolwork and such is there any other treatment available in canada thats not too expensive that doesnt need to b added every day?
Shamu23
I just did a 25% waterchange and added the meds again. Now I realize that i need to order more or else im gonna run out in 2 or 3 days. I also tested the water and here r all the updated results:
ammonia-0
nitrite-0
ph-7.8-8 (hard to tell the colors apart but same as usual, i think it was closer to 8)
nitrate- finally showing some! It was the lowest reading which is 12.5. Weird that there was never any before unsure.gif

Hi Jule!
Daryl added a link to my question on flukes if you want to check it out. I am not sure how to copy it in here, but it is very in depth WHY it has to be treated for in that way. Good luck, I know I have to start my treatment tonight! But my nitrates have been up so I have been doing daily water changes in my 50 gall to get it down. You can do it.
