ok I am leaving for 4 weeks to go to England...
so I need so help..

What do I do about the 2 betta tanks? one is 1 gallon the other is a 2.5 both have no filters

Should I do a quick cycle on the 45 gallon and place my 2 goldfish in there? more space and less evaporation than they get from the 20.

I can't get any other tanks...

I have a 7 gallon that is empty..thinking of placing one of the bettas in there.

so any advice or help for me biggrin.gif

would you suggest placing some pest snails in the goldfish tank so they could much on them?

Before I offer any suggestions, will somebody be able to feed the fish for you and maybe just do a small water change?

yes there will be

Well as for giving the goldies snails, I don't know about that one. My goldies never touched 'pest snails', yours may not either.

For the feeding, I'd just leave the correct daily amount of food in a pill dispenser in front of each tank, so the pet sitter can just dump it in the tank. I'd actually opt to feed them every second day, to cut down on the amount of waste in the water.

As for cycling the 45 gallon, that would be great if you're positive the cycle is stable. If not, it could be very bad. How long until you actually go?

Being gone for 4 weeks crosses the line between "vacation care" and "full care" in my opinion. Your fish sitter needs to be fully versed in all things fish. This means walking him/her through water changes multiple times and having them DO it, in front of you. Talk about dangers of sucking up fish in syphon tubes, how much you feed and why (many will feed too much. It is tough, though to lay out 4 weeks of food - so the discussion is very important). Mention any "pitfalls" you may have discovered in your particular system - and talk about how you solved them and why. Each system is different - and you know your's best.

You may wish to have an informative book available for your fish sitter - it could help for questions that come up. I would also suggest showing your assistant this web site - and make sure they know how to come here and ask for help.

Cover some of the basics of emergency care. Explain cycle - so the sitter does not clean the bowls/tanks out completely in an effort to "do a great job". Show your sitter where some common meds are stored.

4 weeks is a long time.... but with a competant caretaker, you should have few worries.

I agree with Daryl, 4 weeks is long enough to need a good care taker. I think for the bettas it won't be too bad, especially if you can move one to a 7 gallon. The goldies...as we all know...will be the challange. If you could show the person how to do water changes, and then leave very detailed directions about how and when to preform maintence, I think it will be fine.

Thanks gals..

My goldfish will eat snails..

and last time I did this the sitter just fed them a little..and they were fine

It will be around 40 days til i leave

I wouldn't do snails those are nasty boogers to get rid of! They get down in your filter and are nearly impossible to exterminate, I would never purposefully intoduce them, because even if my goldies would eat them they lay eggs in clear masses that are nearly impossible to find and reproduce like mad, they should change that saying "reproduce like rabbits" to reproduce like pest snails. Your fish should be fine with sparse feedings from your helper for a month. England sounds like fun!

As long as you have a cycled filter from your 20 gallon, you will be able to swap it onto the 45 gallon when you transfer the fish, and shouldn't need to worry about cycling... unless you have some sort of size/space constraint I'm not aware of.

no i don't have a size/space constraint...

I will be placing the other betta in the 20 gallon

AS for the betta in the 20 gallon can i have an airstone instead of a filter...the tank has no cover so the water evaporates very fast
