I have some no more algae tabs that I use quite frequently in my tank while I am changing the water to losen up th algae on items in the tank and make it easier to scrub off. I usually have the fish out of the tank when I put it in there . well yesterday I put half a tab in as a presentative and came home to find one of my spotted cat fish dead at the back of the tank under the bubble wand. His barbells were missing and he had a red spot on the bottom of him. The other cat and my goldie are doing great. Have any of the rest of you experienced this?

Eek, that sucks!

You have to consider that some of those no-algae products may have herbicides (toxins) in them. If a person just happens to have a fish that is sensitive to those toxins, then it can be fatal. sad.gif

That may be what happened. Just miss the little guy. I was trying to figure out how his barbells went missing. Maybe my goldie or the other cat ate them.

oh i'm sorry to hear about your little guy taking a bad turn because of the algae tab. sad.gif

i can't say that's ever happened to me. usually unless it's a big problem, i let the algae cover the sides of my tank (including the bottom) except the front for viewing.

that's such a mystery though. blink.gif

I lost 11 fish in one algacide dosing. Stay away from algacides, most algae's are fairly easy to get rid of after you identify which one/s you have. I learned this the heard way.

are these the jungle tabs? I used one once on a tank that had an extreme brown/green algae problem where I just couldnt keep up with it anymore, it would grow back completely within 2 or 3 days and clog the filter and everything, couldnt see the fish, and that one time it worked great. fish were ok, no algae at all for several months (now its pretty bad again but not as bad, getting better) but I have not used them again. A friend of mine used the API stuff and it worked but some of her fish died but they died all the time anyway cause she did just about nothing for that tank except throw in some food once in awhile and add the algae stuff, we tested ammonia and ph once, both were off the charts. Worst of all she would just leave the dead fish to rot in the tank sad.gif

Sorry about your cat--it's true, some types of cats are more sensitive than others. I noticed when one of my cories passed his barbels were missing too when I found him the next day.

I never have any algae in any of my tanks so never have to deal with it. Not sure why--maybe because the temps are usually around 72 74 F. They don't get much direct sunlight either, if any.
