Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?
Callie
Hi guys ( i feel like i've been posting a lot lately unsure.gif )

it appears that i have yet another question.

well, here goes:

A really good friend of mine just came back from
the Cayman Islands.
He brought me back a piece of coral that he found on the
beach>> saying that he thought it would look good in one
of my goldfish aquariums.

I of course, agree biggrin.gif

but the question remains.
is it allright if i put the decorative coral in my tank w/ my goldies??? (after i steralize it of course)

thanks heartpump.gif

im not sure about this but some things like that can alter water quality like ph and stuff like that
Callie
yea.
I think i've heard that before too (one of the reasons why i'm asking the question)

i think it alters the calcium content of the water? (or something?)

>.<"

>>but is it hurtfull to goldies?

It well make your ph go up. Maybe just put it on top of the tank?

Coral can shoot your pH up even if it's dead... that's why it's safer to buy imitate, paint coral at the shop than the real ones.

coral is sharp and can also injure your goldfish. Also, you must make sure that the animal part of the coral is completely removed from the structure. Any remaining parts will foul your tank and probably kill your fish. I agree with the others, do not put it in your tank If you must have coral, get one from the pet shop that has been cured, even then really watch your water quality

you could always place it in a goldfish bowl with gravel and fake plants..
