I started a 40 gallon tank from scratch to eventually keep 2-3 goldfish and 2 african dwarf frogs. I have a 70 gallon aqua-clear filter, 1 inch gravel bed, and air-stone. I started out with de-choronized tap water, and a capful of seachem brand Stability. I put in one small feeder comet goldfish, roughly 2inch, to begin cycling, along with the two dwarf frogs that i already have. Ammonia eventually spiked and I ended up using about 2-3 capfuls of Ammo-lock to ease conditions for the goldfish. The ammonia essentially stayed through the roof (8.0). I took the fish and both frogs out and put them in a 20 gallon tank that has already been cycled because i was worried about them. The water in my main tank became cloudy to the point i could not see through it. I assume this is the bacterial bloom. This cloudiness has not subsided and it has been about a week an a half. I keep testing for nitrites and they are barely there, at around a .25, and never seem to be increasing. Why are my nitrites not breaking down the ammonia? Is it just going to take awhile or did i do something wrong? It has been 3 weeks since i started and i have barely any nitrites....doesn't make sense to me. any advice would greatly help me. thank you

Hello and Welcome to Koko's! smile.gif

The problem is that your ammonia is too high. Ammonia that high inhibits the beneficial bacteria to grow, and the amount is too high for the cycle to accomodate.
Try doing a 75% water change and test again. The ammonia level shouldn't get above 4 - 5, but no more than .5 if you have fish in there!
If you have them in the other tank now, you may as well finish this as a fishless cycle. It's much less stressful for the fish. exactly.gif Do you have the right ammonia? Once the ammonia level drops, you'll have to start adding it to feed the bb's (beneficial bacterias).
