Hi,

just wondering... I'm in the market for a new 25 gal tank and found one at a fish store on sale for $175 CAN. It includes the tank, hood, light, aquaclear 50, heater, food, and some other useless stuff. It seems to be a good deal for a new tank. It's MSRP according to the store is around 250. Any ideas as to whether or not this tank should be my choice?

thanks

Personally I don't really like packages like that.
They throw in a lot of stuff we usually don't need or they have a hard time selling. Most stores I know will generally give discount if you buy a lot of stuff.

I would recommend selecting your own set of equipment (that you really need), then ask the store how much would they charge for them.

True, but the stuff you don't really need is never that expensive and usually you can just discard it. I was looking around other stores and found that big tanks alone are almost 100 plus the hood is around 30-60 plus the filters are around 50-60 so as i see it, i might as well just get the package and use what i want rather than just buying seperately. Considering the tank is on sale that is. I dont know... this looks like a high quality tank, not one of those cheap ones from nnnn or petcetra. It's a small store and they seem to know their stuff, however, their fish are over priced. Cardinal tetras for $9.99, medium goldfish for 12.99! you can easily get one at nnnn for $3-4. But i guess you won't have the disease and death problems with the smaller store. I'll stop rambling.

Thanks

this is what Ihave done and always works for me ..wal~mart sells kits.... here in Onatrio a 29g kit runs at 145$ comes with heater filter, hoods and a few odd ends ..then I purchase a good filter because the ones that come in the kit are ok but not the best..then I run both filters gives me extra turn over and more room for biomedia . I have done it with all my tanks and have not had a problem smile.gif

hmmm... maybe i'll look into that. Thanks

i have a nnnnnn 29 gal aquatech kit, using only the filter it came with... seems good so far... haven't finished cycling tho, so i dunno...

It seems to me that the tank kits are a pretty darn good deal. Around here (midwest United States) "Tetra" brand 20 gallon kits go for about $80. And they include tank, light/hood, filter, food, net, one dose of water conditioner, and a heater. I like it that most everything you need is in one box. You can always buy the kit, then add on more equipment so it fits your needs/requirements.

One thing to keep in mind about the tank kits, though: The filter that comes with it may not pump enough gallons per hour.

i like the one i'm looking at because it has a aquaclear 50 with it (one of my fav filter systems). Its also enough to filter a 25 gal tank.

Hello smile.gif

What you can do, is take a pencil and paper to the store, and write down everything that's in the kit, then check the prices of the individual items. Write them down, add them up and compare.
If the prices are close, then choose the one that you feel best with. Sometimes kits are nice because you have the sense of security of having everything you need in one box, instead of possible going store to store.
If the prices are much cheaper one way or the other, then go with the cheapest.
In a nutshell, YOU need to feel comfortable with the decision of what's best for you and your fish. smile.gif

Just my opinion. rolleyes.gif

is it a waterhome kit? have the 20 gallon version and Im happy with it, and thats a good price ur getting it for! My 20 gallon was more than that! Almost all my tanks came from kits, I just bought new filters for most of them..lets see...my 5 gallon was a waterhome kit, wwwayyyy overpriced I realize now (about 150 dollars), my 3 gallon was a kit for a reasonable price, my 10 gallon was kit, same with my 5 gallon hex and my 29 gallon, my 20 gallon and my other 10 gallon, my 46 gallon came with stand, canopy and lights and same with my 125 gallon, Im happy with all of them.
