Full Version: My Fish Will Tell Me When The Water Is Bad

I'm not sure whether it's a bad water quality or the being in the salty water too long.. My lionhead started showing black spots on his one side of gill plate and two tiny black spots on both nose area. I was puzzling until I did a 85% w/c the other day. Both black spots on the nose area are gone completely and the black spot on the gill plate area is fading.

The fish had gone through a week of PC/Prazi treatment and two weeks of salt (salt overdosage for two days during the process). Now I believe the salt has been completely removed after several large w/c.

Do your fish do the same?

he could of had some issues .. most black spots are a sign of healing ..from ammonia burns and such.

My fish had never exposed to high Ammonia level since the day I got him. The black spots werent there until the fish had been in my tank for almost two weeks. Then the spots were there for several days until I did a 85% w/c.

So the black spots doesn't mean the water is bad?

it very well could mean that with all your care and all you have done to be sure she/he is in good healthy water is paying off and she is healing from any previous water issues she may have had prior to your care biggrin.gif ..if your water was bad she would most likly flash you would see signs of redness and other symptoms
Fishy Fish
Not necessarily, no. The fish may have had issues in those areas before you got them, and the salt treated it. As Heidi said, black is usually a sign of healing.
What were the water params in your tank at the time? How was the fish behaving in the salted water? It can bother some fish, but it most often has a behavior change, not a skin reaction.

You mentioned using the Prazi for a week. Did you replace it when you did your water change? If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's best to do Prazi for 2 weeks.

Edit: Sorry Heidi! I posted the same time as you. rolleyes.gif

Thanks for clarify that for me. I added back the Prazi after the w/c.

I think the fish gotten bigger after two weeks of heavy feedings. The 20g tank is getting smaller and smaller, the fish is getting bigger and bigger.
