Full Version: Did My Tank Just Cycle?
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?

Just did a water test and my ammonia is at 0, nitrites is 0, and nitrates are a strong 10ppm. I had a nitrite spike last week that I got under control with large, daily WCs.

Does that mean I'm cycled? I know I should keep an eye on it still and all, but I would be soooo happy if this is a start! happydance.gif

It looks very good!!! hi5.gif Do you have your fish in it already? If the readings are the same tomorrow, I'd say you've got yourself a cycled tank!
Keep us posted!!! gudluksn.gif

My fish is in the tank, and has been throughout the whole ordeal. Can't wait to see what news the water holds tomorrow...

sorry i haven't posted in forever...i was slammed at work! slammed! i work for the gov't and we released a national report on child abuse and neglect in kids under 1 year old, and i was handling all the media relations. soooo busy.

anywho, i've been testing and am still getting 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites. my test today read about 10 nitrates -- maybe a smidge darker.

so i'm guessin' i'm cycled. huzzah!

...what's the deal from here? weekly testing and changing? how much of a w/c -- 50%? where should my nitrates stay 10-20ish? what is too high?

Hi leslie!
Water changes can slow down a bit now you are cycled- Congratulations!! The water is now safe for Fischer.

Use the nitrate reading to see how much water you now need to change and how often. Don't let the nitrates go over 20. You'll still be looking at once a week water changes between 40 and 50% and occasional (once monthly) 80% to cut back bacterial content. If you start feeding more, you'll need to adjust that rough guide- more changes will be needed.

You only have one fish so you will probably be all-right with that kind of regime. You can change more if you want, quite safely smile.gif

And well done on your hard work for a good cause too (re-your job).
