A few months ago I removed the background from my tank and started letting a good coat of algae grow. In the past week or so I've noticed my goldies really chowing down on it biggrin.gif I was wondering if they'd ever use it as a snack.

Here's George picking at the back. Fred's been doing it for weeks but George just started yesterday...he's definatly the slower of the two tongue.gif

I saw my one fish pick at my lovely brown algae ....I think it must of tasted as bad as it looks ..it wasn't a big hit

Wow that's some crazy algae growth! Does their tank get direct sunlight? I only seem to get the brown slime stuff in my tanks, but I keep them dimly lit idont.gif

I wonder if I can cultivate some green algae in a container outside without attracting the most-quit-toes. I can picture spending my mornings scraping algae out of plastic containers to feed to the goldies biggrin.gif It should have the affect of keeping the goldies in green water, without actually keeping them in green water? biggrin.gif

Yes the tank gets direct sunlight, well for a couple of hours a day. I used to keep the curtains closed but when I decided to grow the algae I opened them. You could get some silk plants or ornamnts and have algae grow on those, then rotate them into your tank.

yeah algae's such a bugger sometimes. There's a lot of places where my fish could munch but I don't think they like it too much...... South Dakota algae must be different then Canada algae biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

My tank's by the window too, and there's good lighting. So algae has no problem taking over my tank........and the top of the filters.

Algae can look so cool in some places, and just awful in others.........................oy

Chrissy, that algae's a nice fresh color. I bet it does taste good (not going to offer to try no..) and very good for them too. I like the look of it. Congrats on your new natural look backdrop smile.gif

my darl likes his algae too! I have a really thick layer of green algae over a terracotta dish which he likes to nibble on. I'm changing my background to plain black and will let algae grow on the back. I hope I get a good coating over the sunken ship ornament, too.

Thanks! I like it too, except for that big bare patch. I think it's from the filter outflow.

my goldies have started to eat the purplish-brown hairy algae that i seem to get in my tank. it's a shame really, cos it looked pretty blowing in the 'wind' from the filter output! i'd love green algae, but all i get is brown slime and this nice hairy stuff smile.gif
