i was thinking in a few weeks in getting tetras, what size tank is good for tetras? any good sites for their care? thanks

depending on the school size of tetras you want to have, i would recommend a minimum of 29 gal for a happy community tank. biggrin.gif

i'm no expert though, so perhaps waiting for someone better educated in tropical fishkeeping comes along. wink.gif

If you just want to get one species, you could get away with a 10 gallon (for a nice school of 6-10 fish). Of course, as always the bigger tank the better. Whatever types you get, make sure you have at least 4 of each speceis because they are schooling fish and are much happier in large numbers smile.gif

They aren't too hard to care for. You just need to feed them small amounts a few times a day, have a heater and of course, a cycled tank. I use these sites sometimes for fish info http://badmanstropicalfish.com/ http://www.fishlore.com/

Bigger the better. A tetra will use the full tank no matter the size rather it be 125g to 10g. If you just want a few, say 6 or so witha few corys, a 15g or 20g is fine. Now if you want a large school, say 15-20 then I would say a 30g to a 55g.

The size of the tank also depends on what kind of tetras you want.... For instance, you could have up to 10 of the small species (neons or cardinals) in a 10 gallon, but probably about half that (5-6) if they were a bigger variety (Serpae, x-ray, etc).

I agree, the bigger the better, becuase they prefer to be kept in the largest group possible.

I agree also with ChrissyBee, tetras need a heater, a filter that pumps your tank water 10 times an hour (your tank size times 10, that number will appear on the filter box as X gph, which is gallons per hour), and YES a cycled tank. I feed my neons once a day, and they seem happy.

Have fun! smile.gif

You don't require 10x filtration on a tetra tank a filter that is rated for your size tank will be sufficient. 10x filtration on tetra tank is nuts the current would be too strong for them wink.gif

Oh, my bad, Dan. Oh well, more then enough filtration is better than not enough, right??? Whistle.gif blush.gif

Tetras are fun fish and there are so many different kinds. Always make sure you get a minimum of 6 for them to be happy. They are schooling fish and need a large group to feel safe and comfortable.

My personal favorite are ember (Hyphessobrycon amaandae) tetras. They max out at less than an inch and are a striking orange color. I have a school of them in a planted 10 gallon.

WOW, jsrtist, I'd never heard of that kind of tetra before, so I googled them, and they are very pretty!

Strong current is not good for tetra and they will get stressed by it. Make sure the tank is fully planted and it will make the tetras feel safe and happy.
