Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank
Callie
OKAY.

So, for my sixteenth birthday I've asked for a new 100 gallon tank w/ hood and lights- the works smile.gif
my friends are all making fun of me for it.

LOL.

back to the point >>

this tank would be set up in my garage (the rents are tired of seeing so many tanks in the house tongue.gif)
But more importantly, i wanted to eventually turn it into a planted tank.
I've never kept real aquatic plants before, let alone w/ goldfish!!

questions:
1. what is a good beginers plant (compatable w/ goldies), really hardy- ect;
2. how does one go about quarentining a plant? and how do i know if its carrying something that could potentially be harmfull to my fishies?
3. can i just get a plant from my lfs?...they're not exactly labeled... (i would just ask them these questions, but they're not exactly that knowledgable in the field of fish....after all, they sold me my first goldfish and strongly reccamended that i keep her in a bowl...
>.<"

any help?

If you want to keep plant with goldies, you have two options
1. Keep a lot and a lot of plant in your tank. So the aggression toward plant get even and plant won't die
2. Keep a special hardy goldfish prove plant. ( Every Java Fern, Anubias)

I suggest to get them from Ebay(seller name: AquaticMagic). He's from oversea. But very cheap and shipping is free(sometime)

Read up on the pinned threads at the top. Do you have any idea what the wattage of the lights will be you really need a minimum of 2 watts per gallon. Big leaf plants will do good In a goldfish tank the fine leaf plants will get ripped to shreds so they are really just a waste of money. God luck setting up a planted goldfish tank is hard work i have one and recently stripped it from 50different plants to 3 as they were growing that well.

If you are looking to buy online this site is good i have recommended it to a couple of people on this board that live in the US

biggrin.gif Sounds like something that would happen to me.

Don't worry about planting, it's not as bad as it sounds. I have 3 plants in my tank now, the fish constantly pick at them but they're doing just fine. The most trouble I have with them is picking the lose leaves out of the tank every few days.
