Full Version: Green Algae Good For Gold Fish?

I'm kinda of under impression that green algae is a good source of food for gold fish? I dont know where did I get that impression from. But I've heard and seen people do that for their fish.

Specially it makes sense when you have a pond and I'm sure there are plenty of algaes booming in it. Are they good for the fish?

If so, how can I achieve that in a fish tank? Would leaving the lights ON at least 10-12 hrs a day enough to grow algae in the tank?

I'm pretty new to gold fish n not sure what is their atitude towards green algae.

Any inputs?

Yeah, it's good for them. I only have it growing well in one of my tanks because there's more watts per gallon. I leave the lights on 12 hours a day in both tanks.

Ok, thx. I will get a higher wattage lights if I have to. Currently I think I have a 13w sun light on my 20g high. The light originally made for a 10g. I'm leaving it on during cycling already. Hopefully it will give me some green vegie by the cycle complete.

Yes green algae is very good for them. It reduces the Nitrate in the water and also makes very healthy snack for the goldies.

This one is completely irrefutable & I can assure you there won't be a long thread with countering arguments. rofl3.gif

Algae is good for them no doubt..but growing algae in the tank includes on the walls and there is this conflict of it being good for them and wanting to see the fish!

In ponding greenwater is perfectly healthy, but ponders usually don't go through the time and expense of a pond to see green water and no fish! So finding the balance between what is good for them and what we like..to see them!

I bought wafers for my pleco's and found the goldies ate them faster than the plecos did!

I also feed algae wafers to my goldfish as a vegetable supplement. They attack it as soon as it hits the water (just like they attach every other kind of food offered to them)!

I had a really thick carpet of green algae growing on the back wall of my tank so I scraped off a little bit into strands (mostly because I wanted to find out how thick it was) and my little Near totally loved it. Same can't be said for the tubifex worms though, he just takes them in his mouth and spits them back out all over the tank, the little horror glare.gif
