Hello Everyone I saw something weird on my betta like a week ago but I didnt take it serious until now anyways I was reading up some stuffs about betta's and I dont know if its serious. I do a 50& water change every week and he has no filter in his 10 gallon aquarium all of his test strips came out good. Hes swollen and he has tail rot that i was treating him with salt but it never got better. I was using bettafix also but that never helped. I wanna use melifix but I heard that its strong. I will try to get a pic of him soon but i seen one on the internet and it looks like the same part is swollen for my betta. http://www.fishforums.net/content-page/571...nation/page/20/ on that site it has a betta fish that is blue and it has a swollen area and thats how my betta fish looks like with the swollen area. For some reason I cant get a good pic like that.
Please Help!!!

Do you have a heater in this tank? I would suggest first and foremost that you get yourself a filter and heater for this tank, that will help keep your water quality in check.

Is your fish eating well, and is he active?

How much salt are you putting in the water?

I have used Melafix for my bettas and all has been well. Make sure to follow the directions on the bottle, but just use half the amount it calls for. If a course of treatment at half dosage doesn't help out try it at full strength.

I am wondering if the 'swelling' is actually some sort of impaction. Without a better angle shot I can't tell for sure, but it does not look to me to be the onset of dropsy or anything. This may sound gross, but have you seen this fish poop recently? Mine went through a tough time a while back and ended up passing a MASSIVE turd and was just fine.

Hi Lady D Thanks for responding to my post. Well I do have a heater in his tank for winter and summer well he dont need it, its 79 F in his tank and he loves the water warmer. I bought a filter b4 and it was sucking him in so I decided to take it out. I just ordered another filter and its gonna be comming on Thursday or soon so I cant wait for that. His water is always crystal clear I feed him a lil twice a day, hes verry active and hes eating really well so no problem with that. u think its an impaction? how did he get it? Im really worried hes out family pet cux everyone loves this lil guy so I dont wanna lose him. I did a 100% water change in his aquarium on sunday and i didint add any salt. im going out in the next hour or so to buy him melifix and I wanna try that on him. I havent see him poop lately thanks for making me clear on that Im gonna check on him whn I feed him later.

It could be a natural deformity brought on by growth. It could also be a blood infection, pinched spine, parasite, tumor or abscess. Right now, without photos its too hard to tell. I would recommend placing him into a tank with a sponge filter while continuing to medicate him.

Thanks for replying to my message sushi I ordered a Duetto internal filter for my betta I heard that its a good one with little flow. I will be getting it in a few days. http://www.mops.ca/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/sk...d6ef+1203385641. I just gived him his first does of Melafix it says on the bottle 1 teaspoon (5ml) per 10 gallon but I gived him half of it (half teaspoon).should I put his heater lower that 78F because its at 78 now I just dont wanna burn him in anyway with the medication but I really would like his tail to get better.

78 degrees is perfectly fine.

Right now my main concern is that you are putting melafix in his tank with out any filter. Do you have an air pump?

Is that bad without a filter? I have an airpump but its too strong for him. I should be getting his filter soon tho.

The filter can provide a source of airation meds suck all the oxygen out of the water that is why sushi probably asked about the air pump

Yes, thats exactly why I was asking. Even if the air pump is too strong, you should try using it. You can tie a not in the piping to decrease flow. You need some type of water movement going on.

You can also buy little regulator for flow control, just look around in your pet shop supplies where the air line and all those goodies are. You can cut the line, put the regulator in, and turn the knob to turn the air flow up and down to a comfortable level with your betta until the filter arrives.

When the filter comes do not put carbon in the pads, carbon will remove all meds from the tank. Wait until you are done dosing, then put carbon in for three or four days to take the meds out of the water before you try round two of meds (if round one doesn't show an improvement).

Ok thanks Dan,Sushi and Lady D I will get that asap in his tank smile.gif

Ok I just recieved his filter and I am really impressed about it... It has lil flow for him and hes enjoying it. I just hope he feels better soon cux he doesnt look that good. he was acting all weird last night when I gived him his second does of melafix and Im only using half the amount they say on the bottle, he was lying on the bottom of the aquarium in the corner and he never does that. Since he got the heater added in his aquraium he always sleepy under it but I have no idea whats wrong. I turned down his heater to 75F lastnight and I think I m gonna leave it at that for now ( its usually at 78-79F). I just wanted to know if i should complete the 7 days for melafix then do a water change? or should I change the water sooner?
Thanks Lady D lol smile.gif
sally2007
Anyone?
Lady_D
Sorry for such a late reply. I hope your fish is still doing well! I would complete the med run, then do a water change and run carbon for a couple of days. That way all of the meds are taken out of the water and it will give you time to see if he is making any positive progress.

Keep an eye on your tank parameters, you will be starting a cycle now that you have a filter going and bettas are really sensitive to ammonia.
