I got a male and a female together in a 10g. The male is really young and they are getting along great.
Thats actually not a good idea if you plan on breeding but fine if you are just keeping them. I kept non-breeding males and breeding females in a 20 long. The male in with the female will eventually lose his drive to breed and will actually start acting more like a female. Male bettas that don't show interest in breeding anymore actually make good betta community candidates. The BEST way to prepare a male is with a mirror or another male. Allow them to see each other every once in awhile and then start conditioning with the female. I always had flawless result through using that technique to raise males.
Thats just what worked for me. There are lots of breeders and I swear each one had their own technique.
