I noticed yesterday that the tips of my betta Floppy's fins had turned brown and theres fuzzy stuff around them, they're falling off now. I think I figured out the cause though, I guess he didnt eat all his food so it sank to the bottom which probably causd an ammonia spike. I changed his water as soon as I saw that. I looked through my fishie meds and decided to go with melafix since I dont really have a diagnosis yet, Im just guessing.

NO. DO NOT USE MELAFIX.

Is there a reason not to use Melafix, I know it is a higher concentration than Bettafix, but you can adjust how much you put in.

Labryninth Organ (Bettas are labryninth fish) + Oil (Melafix is Tea Tree Oil) = A BIG no-no.

I have done some reading around on the net about the use of Melafix and Bettas (I dont have experience of keeping them myself) and have found that it is ok, so long as the amount is adjusted. And Bettafix has tea tree in it, I know that it is a low concentration, but why would they sell it if it was bad for them? I dont want to start an argument or anything, Its just what I have read on various boards, 2 I have stated below. I understand what you are saying.

Sounds like fungus/finrot. I would use maracyn. Did this with my betta last week & he looks wonderful now.

i've used melafix with bettas several times and never had a problem. I used very little, just enough to cover the bottom of the cap. I have a tiny bit of maracyn 2 left I think, will that do? The one part of his tail has fallen off now, poor baby Im gonna feed him less today just incase if he's not hungry there wont b as much uneaten food and it'll b easier to remove.

Not sure if the Maracyn 2 will work as I believe one medication is gram positive & one is gram negative. Prior to using the Maracyn I used the Jungle Fungus Clear as my betta began with a fungus that went into tailrot. It wasn't until I added the Maracyn did I see definite improvement. Yes, I would hold off on feeding since he is not eating much.

so should I continue with melafix or switch to maracyn 2?

Melafix is 100% fine to use as long as your are using it correctly. I always have the best results when using melafix on fin rot.

I bought some of that jungle fungues cear stuff, it says it treats finrot, fungus and a whole lot of other things. Should I stick with melafix or switch to that? His fins r looking ok now that those parts fell off

my
: is if the fish is improving, stay with the treatment you are using. No need using meds that are not needed, that could cause more issues that you already have.

I would stick with the Melafix as you have seen that it is working, I used to use it and had excellent results when treating for minor cases, albeit with goldies!!
Good luck, and I hope your Betta continues to improve
