I would really like to make one of these (it would go on our future patio)....

1 question.

where do you get the barrel?

(i know it sounds stupid, but i can't figure it out >.< )
glitterfish
What size barrel are you looking for? There are may online sites that sell them as well as farm supply stores. Depending on the size you want, maybe even garden centers.
Callie
maybe 30- 50 gallons.

it'd be for my telescope (and hopefully a moore) ^^
Callie
hmmmm...there's a garden center near my house, maybe they have one.
...another question (that's probibly gonna sound kinda stupid >.<): when you get the barrel....is it allready in half? or do i have to like...saw it or something? are most of them water tight---i mean, i guess i could line it in plastic.....hmmmmm.

--->are they expensive?
Ranchugirl
Depends on where you get them from, Callie. I paid 25$ for each half barrel (but that was a few years ago), and got mine at a lumber hard that sold complete barrels and half barrels, but some stores have only full barrels. If you have a TraktorSupply store in your area, I saw some half barrels there. I even saw some half barrels at Wal*mart a while ago. With spring approaching, they might pop up more often now.

Callie,

Lowe's sells a rigid, plastic barrel liner to make your half-barrel into a water-tight tub. They aren't very expensive, though the price evades me right now. The half barrel ponds look really cool.

You know something else that is nice? A friend of mine has what is called a "fish pot", which is about the size of a half-barrel. It is an Asian imported piece of fired ceramic. Kind of like the big planters we saw a few years ago, but no holes in the bottom. Really pretty. Have no idea hwere to find one of those, but I bet you could "Google" it.

You can get a barrel at almost any farm store, (I recomend the blue plastic there water tight and industructable) you can get half barrels at some. I have one set up for 2 commons (they were rescues)right now which is too small i know but they get three water changes a week and they're doing fine. My mom works at a farm store and i get alot of free pond stuff they where going to throw out i've gotten probably $500.00 dollars in pumps a tonne of test kits and probably $300.00 dollars of ponds and half barrels and i got 5 more half barrel ponds that I need to pick up. To tell you it's not helping my addiction. Incase you we're wondering i have a serious case of TGA(Terminal Goldfish Addiction).

Keep in mind, a wooden half-barrel will need a good liner. The liner can be more expensive than the barrel. A typical half barrel will be about 23 to 29 US Gallons. So that's about 2.5 fancy goldfish, and 2 common is pushing the limits.

If you can get by with a RubberMaid stock tank, it's probably a better way to go. Doesn't need a liner, and you can get larger sizes. http://www.rcpworksmarter.com/rcp/products...jsp?rcpNum=4244

I like container ponds. Wish I had a better place for mine. rolleyes.gif

Callie, Daniel there has a beautiful container pond so he can give you loads of wonderful information. smile.gif

BeancurdTurtle is right you acn get stock tanks in sizes up to 1500 gallons you can get them in rubber or plastic. They're built for horses and cattle so you know they're tough. If i we're you i'd find the local farm supply store and i'll gurantee they can order you one if they don't have one there.

---> stock tanks sound great ^^

but....
i don't think i have the space or time to manage one.
>.<
i'm kinda new to ponds (and goldfish in general) and wanna start small.
the barrel pond (30ish gallons)
would probibly go on the patio and be for my telescope (Buckets) and a future black moor(hopefully).
i'd eventually like to look into stock tanks though.... (or maybe even an in-ground pond for some commons)
but i was hoping to do a barrel pond seeing as the 'half barrels' and liners are readily available in my area--- and i have some difficulty ordering things...
>.<
(the parents arn't too keen on me ordering goldfish stuff online tongue.gif )

ALTHOUGH rubbermaids do sound a bit easier (i'm fairly certain that i have a thirty gallon sitting in my garage)
....hmmmmmm.....

You can get stock tanks as small as 30 gallons. I've been thinking about getting a 300 or 500 gallon stock tank but these sizes are so small that there more like outside aquariums than ponds.
