Yesterday I went to my friends house and the water level in her tropical tank had dropped by about 3 inches, the water was dirty, algae covered everything and there was a dead rotting fish stuck to the filter! Her mom said that it had been there for weeks maybe even months, she must not spend a single minute looking at her fish to not notice that! i immediately offered to clean it for her although itsd her responsibility but it was just horrible, I clenaed her goldie's tank too cause it was dirty too and she removed his filter that I put ont here for some reason. She's gonna give the tank away once her fish die, I wonder why she got it in the first place.

i know a few people who do that, buy a new pet then get bored of it and wait for it to die....from my experience they always seemed to get the particular animal because someone else got one and they thought it was neat or cool.....but it's still sad to see.

yeah she got it after i got my first 10 gallon ofcourse she got a 20 gallon cause she always wants to have something better but now the poor fish have to suffer if another one dies then i'll offer to take her last tigerbarb cause I have a tigerbabr tank but I cant take both cause then i'd b overstocked and Im just gonna keep an eye on her tank make sure that she cleans it. Seriously, how can u not see a rotten dead fish on the filter! And her goldfish has parasites, he's also lived the past 5 years in a bowl until I talked her into getting a tank, well actually I sorta convinced her mom cause I gave her a paper about goldfish and her mom saw it. Its the same with her dog, she's old and she wants a new dog and is basically waiting for her other dog to die cry3.gif

Some people just don't care... sad but true. Don't you just want to shake some sense into these people (literally)?

Some people shouldn't breed.

Some people shouldn't have kids

Some people shouldn't have pets.

Simple as that.

I talked to her on the bus today and told her that they're her responsibility and that she needs to take care of them she said that cleaning their tank is boring! That doesnt mean u can just the the fish die! I told her she could just give the fish to me and sell the tank cause I didnt know what else to say! I dont know if she'll actually give them to me (she did agree with me on the bus) but they r certainly welcome here any time lol. I've already tried many things to get her to take better care of them

Tell her every time she cleans the tank she can have $10 that is what my mum says to me cause my brother is too lazy to clean his Axolotl tank and sadly i fall for it every time and never get the money lol.

It always makes me sad (and a bit disgusted) that there are so many people in the world who just don't care and think that animals are disposable. A terrible mode of thought for sure. We've subjected these animals to live in captivity so the least we can do is care for their well-being! Hope you can talk some (more) sense into her or that she gives her fish to you!

See if you can get her to give/sell you the bigger tank, then do some upgrades on your own. Maybe that will allow you to take in some of her poor, neglected fishies so that they will be cared for properly.

I can understand how someone would find cleaning a tank boring, but I find cleaning mine kinda theraputic. I put on some music (usually my iTunes playlist or Amy Winehouse) and make a day of it.

LOL I love cleaning my tank I was wondering if I was the only one that finds it relaxing my in-laws think it's a waste of time and a lot of work for nothing but they probably think you have to empty the tank and scrub weekly lol

My boyfriend used to come over to help me, but he never developed the understanding and love of the task that I have. He still thinks it is a waste of time, but he does enjoy the sight of a beautiful tank. I usually do mine 100% every two or three weeks, depending on what the water tells me. biggrin.gif

update

both fish died, but at least she did try to save them by qt'ing the sick one but they both ended up dying. She told me that they're taking it out of her room and moving to the living room and her mom will care for them, but they want easier fish such as guppies which is good I told them to only get a few if they want to do less waterchanges and she said thats what they were planning to do. Poor fishies, too bad I couldnt save them

sorry to here about your friends' fish. You might want to give them some advice about what to do with the tank now. For example, if it has no fish in there they need to adda fod source to keep the bacteria alive.
Also, depending on what the fish died of they may need to disinfect the tank and then do a fishless cycle.

Personally I don't particularly enjoy waterchanges/cleaning the tank but I just made it part of my routine (on a Sunday morning) so I don't even really think about it anymore.
