Full Version: Water Chillers?

So, both of my tanks are placed near windows and I realized the risk when putting them here in temperature difference. It's not entirely temp diff that I am concerned about but the temp that the water will rise to. Its winter now, so I'm never really worried but in the summer it is hotter than haides! With the airconditioning on it is at around 85F and the water feels like bathwater. I will be closing my blinds and doing water changes with cooler water, I guess. But will Athena my goldie be okay in this?

I've considered a water cooler, like a water heater? If this existed I think I would definately invest in one. Seen anything? ["

Hi Kelly

Water coolers do exist but they are huge imagine it being the same size as the tower on a desktop pc. They cost alot i mean like alot lol. The best idea is to fill a drink bottle full of ice and chuck the drink bottle into the tank that way there is no untreated water in the tank. You can also fill then freeze the drink bottle i just use ice as my fridge has an ice maker in it. your water temp is really pushing it in summer 30degrees Celsius is as warm as most tropical fish like if not even warmer i would use the drink bottle method. While Athena may be fine at first she will become sluggish and tired hanging around at the top of the tank since the heat reduces oxygen from the water so make sure you have a good source of aeration.

If you have a canister filter, you can keep it in a bucket of ice in the summer - which is what I am going to try to do. If I get rich, I will invest in some chillers, becuz living in Florida, it's hard to keep tank temps under 80 degrees, even in the winter.

I know in our case, if we have the a/c set at 75 in the house, the water in the tanks is an average of 5 degrees warmer. We'd have to keep it at 70 in the house to keep the tanks under 80. We had to give up though. I set the thermostat at 75 for one month - last month to this month, and our electric bill went from $220 to $440. yikes.gif Sorry fishies. Mommy can't afford that. sad.gif

hey there, yes chillers are available, but they tend to be made for large tanks, I'm not sure how big your tanks are? The last time I looked into chillers, the smallest one came in at about $900.00 (AUD) -these refrigeration units are not cheap! it's not like buying a $25 heater unfortunately sad.gif but hey if you've got the money, can you get me one too! tongue.gif
