My son used the pennies he's been saving for the last few months (he had $5.00) to get some guppies today for our cycled 5 gallon tank. He could only afford 2 right now. Will that be okay, or will we have to get a 3rd? I know they are schooling fish, and I want to be sure they are happy.

He got a turquoise/gold and red/gold. Both males.

Well, males may nip at each others fins.....

I think 'feeder guppies' can be obtained at certain stores. They are captured from the wild, but are still 'poecillia reticula' and may school and hybridise with fancy guppies. At my local store, they are 10 for 1$ or 30 cents.

in my opinion, i think they'll be fine. i'm sure they can keep each other occupied until you can get more buddies for them. i had two male mollies and they did nip a bit at first, but they settled in, i think as long as there isn't a female for them to fight over, they'll get along for the most part.

i like their names too =] creative lol

They'll be fine, just try not to get a female lol

These two were in separate tanks, and so far, not agressive at all. We watched a few tanks for quite a while at the pet store, and we saw female guppies being more agressive towards each other than vice versa.

We're not worried about them not getting along, just want to be sure there is enough of them to feel secure.

Good luck with the guppies! I love guppies!

I agree with the other replies, I'd get one more when you can, to round out the group. LOL that's so sweet that your son saved $5 worth of pennies! Getting new fish is so exciting..... heartpump.gif

Eagerly awaiting pics! smile.gif

I've kept pairs of male guppies a few times with no issues, that was in community tanks. They would hang out together all day and never nipped one another's tails.
Lolafish
These are not good pics becuz they had already gone to bed, and were being camera shy, so I'll get better ones later:

Nemo:

Marlin:

Their tank is positioned right next to his TV, so he watches them while he's playing video games, which is about 24/7 these days. wink.gif He lets us know who's doing what and when. He hasn't fed them yet though, becuz we don't quite have a routine down yet..but he will begin that task soon. Right now, I feed them in the morning before work, and DH feeds them during the afternoon.
Nickie
That is great!!! He will really learn responsibility from looking after them! Not to mention that he has a great fish mom to help him out when he needs it, and fish dad, too!!!

Those guppies look fantastic..I love having fish in my room biggrin.gif

Marlin passed away this morning. Nemo doesn't look so good now. I think he's going to pass now too. I don't know what's wrong. Everything's great otherwise in the tank. cry3.gif

OH NO!!! Poor Ty!!! I wonder what is wrong? Maybe they were sick when you got them? I'm sorry, TM! sad.gif

So sorry to hear about the guppies. sad.gif I remember when I first got my guppies, a few of them died within days of getting them and the others didn't look well but thankfully did get better. Some petstores have a policy that if the fish die within a certain period of time, you can return them and get your money back. Of course, money can't completely replace the loss since each one of these little guys are special in their own way but...
