I've been reading the posts on feeding your goldfish peas and I have yet to read where it says what kind of peas.
Are they frozen sweet peas?

Make sure they are fresh or frozen peas with no added stuff like salt and sugar. Avoid the canned stuff as they are usually filled with junk like salt, sugar, and preservatives. I usually get frozen Birds Eye brand because it is pure peas with no added ingredients.

You can go organic but the chance of it having bacteria is higher than with non-organic obviously. Pick your poison. Pesticide or Bacteria.

I use the same brand as JOH and I have never had a problem with them. I just take a few out of the frezer (I keep them in a ziplock freezer bag), pop them in the micorwave for about 25 sec, pop them out of their skins and feed them to the fish. The love them!!!

Yep, its that easy. wink.gif
May I add you will want to make sure you mash the peas into an appropriate size for the fish. I lost a 1 1/2" oranda due to my inexperience with feeding too large pieces of peas (& a couple of other things). Just make sure you don't give more than a mouthful per fish. Have fun!

Good catch! exactly.gif I didn't remember to add that. It is hard to believe that a fish could get choked on a piece of pea, but I am sure it could happen. My fish are big, so I simply mash them just a little with my fingers before adding them, but if the fish is small, then you may want to mash them really well first.

How do you people microwave your peas?? I've tried putting them in for 10 seconds.... and before the 10 seconds is up, they pop and I have pea particles instead of peas. I use a small bowl with filtered water. idont.gif
What I do instead is boil them on the stove for about 5 - 7 minutes. I put extras in the fridge and usually feed them to her twice in one day.
How many peas do you give them? I gave Dot 3 peas last night (first time since taking her off the Medi-Gold) and she went nuts over them! She ate all three in less than two minutes.
I cut them up small - maybe too small...? After shelling them, I cut off the little stem/tail looking thing - because I don't know what it is - or if it's as tasty to her as the rest of the pea - and I cut each half - in half. I cut each of those into three pieces - so she literally has bite sized pieces. That's okay, right?
If I may ramble... rolleyes.gif She did the cutest thing last night.. She went nuts over the peas, then swam over and nudged the little 2 by 3 inch mirror - then went back for more peas, then back to the mirror. I wondered if she was telling the other fish "Hey! C'mon! We have peas!!!" biggrin.gif She spends a lot of time with that "other fish". I think she wants a buddy again.

Sorry! peas! No other ingredients! peepwallA.gif

I take @ 10 out of the freezer bag, put them w/ small splash of water in a small dish (like I use for dipping) & nuke for 5 seconds. No popping & usually that's enuff.
They keep in the fridge for about 3 days. It's all good.... smile.gif

I take mine straight from the freezer and put them on a paper plate. I don't put them in any water. I nuke mine for about 25 secs. They still are partially frozen when I take them out of the microwave, which makes it easy for me to pop them out of the skins. I then give me a little mash with my thumb and forefinger and then drop them in the tank. My fish get about 3 peas each.

Wow, I never fed my goldfish that many peas.... They usually got about half a pea each.

I do the same as Smilingfish, I put a few peas in a small dish, a little squirt of water, and microwave for about 10-20 seconds. Then I poke the skin with a small knife and pop them out.

I've discovered another veggie for fish: broccoli! I microwave a little floret, then just stick it (or you can clip it) down into the tank, and the fish do a feeding frenzy-type thing, ripping little bits off the top.

Fishy fish~ The little stem/tail thing is the baby plant that would have eventually sprouted from the pea, had it grown.

Thanks for adding that!! I would have been just ploping whole peas in there! My fish are on the smaller side so I'll be mashing them up pretty small.
