I got some free used stuff..it is a heater,filter,and a 2 gallon tank...how do i clean them???

Lolafish
Bleach and water are fine. I also soak my used tanks with PP (potassium permanagate) - not sure if I spelled that right. yeah.gif
Chrissy_Bee
Just make sure you dilute the bleach and rinse, rinse, rinse!
Earth!Mother
PP works for disinfecting A LOT of things. My father bought a pound of it for pretty cheap($15 w/ shipping), which will last indefinitely. You only need a pinch of it for tools, it makes the water a dark pink, not quite purple. Stir it around with one of the tools you are disinfecting and let it sit for around 20 minutes. After this just rinse in fresh water, rinse the bucket, and soak the tools in water WITH dechlorinator.

You can use this for disinfecting plants as well, it will kill incoming snails. Pretty sure you can use it on fish too, but I always feel like it's a bit harsh.

could i used Isopropyl alcohol..which is 70% Isopropyl alcohol.

Anyone??

i don't wait to use bleach..or that other stuff..i kinda sneaked in the stuff
Pixiefish
The bleach or pottassium nukes are very effective. De-chlor neutralizes bleach whilst hygrogen peroxide neutralizes pottassium permanganate.
What's the reason you don't want to use those?
Read Daryl's thread thoroughly - it's very a helpful step by step.
(You will need to toss any filter media, obviously)

i read the link..i like it..i just don't want any of the pp stuff to dye me or my cloths. my mom would kill me..

Then i guess i have to use bleach so how do i do the 1 part bleach and 12 parts water?
Ranchugirl
That is a rather simple dosage - get a measuring cup, and mix 1 cup of bleach with 12 cups of water. Any measurement would work, as long as its one whatever of bleach to 12 whatever of water. In my bigger tanks, I probably would have to measure in gl in stead of cups... biggrin.gif
FishCrazy
Do i just get a buket and fill it up with 12 cups water and one bleach?

Or

Do i need a new bucket?
Ranchugirl
Yes, I'd go with a new bucket - its only a couple of bucks anyway in any dollar store. You never know what you risk when you use one that has already been exposed to cleaning supplies of whatever kind. Just wouldn't risk it.

ok..now i need to convince my mom into letting me buy a bucket...
Pixiefish
Well just do it in the tank, then. A 2 gal is tiny and easyto manage. Do it in the bathroom.
Put your empty filter (ie. media already tossed) plus the heater and anything else into the tank, add the solution and let it sit.
You can use a new sponge or cloth (do not use anything which has been used before or has had contact with any detergent or cleaning fluids) to wipe down the tank sides and parts of the filter etc.
When you're done, tip the lot out into the bath, rinse several times and finally fill and add a double dose of de-chlor. Once you've let that swish around for a while you can do a final rinse and then turn it all upside down to dry off. OK?
FishCrazy
sorry for the silly question but what is a de-chlor?

*sorry school is making me lose my mind.. krazy.gif

I cleaned it today..how long until i can add fish?

Nickie
I am not sure how long til you can add fish. I had to clean my two used filters that I just took off my 29g tank yesterday. I used bleach and did it in my kitchen sink. Then, after rinsing really well, I let them dry in a dish drainer and then boxed them up to use for another tank sometime.
FishCrazy
Yeah i need to know..My mom bought a betta.

I use vinager. It works wonderfully. You scrub it down with vinager, rinse it really well and fill it up.lol.Easy work. smile.gif
Pixiefish
Um - he's already cleaned it with bleach.

If you've rinsed it several times, FC, then you can fill the tank with water (put the filter box and heater in, too), add a double dose of de-chlorinator, swish it around for a few minutes and then rinse. Then you should be good to go. yeah.gif
