I've always fancied, don't know why, a buddha in my tank. This one is made from resin, would it be ok to put it in my tank? I'd seal the bottom if it wasn't solid.

I don't see why not. You would need to clean them really well first. BTW, I love buddhas, too! I really want to get one for my tank one day. Those are very pretty!!!

You'll want to be very careful when putting things in the tank that aren't specifically for aquariums...some items can have a finish (with resin, often a matte spray finish) that can harm the fish, and some ceramic glazes contain lead that can harm the fish...I personally stick to food-safe glazes as they have no lead.

Thanks wyofish! I never knew that!!!

I wanted to put our Buddha in our tank too but we decided against it. Too chicken!

I have some buddhas that are actually from China, and made of jade (which as far as I know is aquarium-safe) and granite stone (which I think is also?). My stepdad goes there to do imports and returns with loads of things made of jade and stone, and he had a few large stone buddhas that broke in the shipping container (no heads--oops) so I took a couple home with me after I visited.
I'm confident about the jade being inert (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!), but I am going to test the stone eventually, let it soak and see if it messes with the hardness and ph and whatnot of the water...
The ones in your links, though, look really pretty. There should really be specific aquarium-safe ones made! After all, goldfish do come from that neck of the woods!

I've seen some that are made specifically for aquarium use but they were UGLY! Why can't anyone make attractive aquarium decor? I just don't understand... Everything's gotta look like a cartoon or "humorous."

Hehe. I know what you mean, though. There's a middle ground between natural-look (fake tree roots or whatever) and totally-unnatural (sharks figurines wearing sailor hats) where it would be nice to have some pretty, nicely-made (and non-pointy) ornaments.

LOL! That stuff's OK if you're into that sort of thing but not everyone is! There's a niche to be filled here, someone should attempt it.

I have one in my tank. It's about 20" tall, weighs about 20 lbs, and is hand carved from solid, limestone rock. It took me a very long time to find it. Most statues I found had some kind of coating that I didn't want to risk.
I purposely got the limestone rock to try to raise the KH in my tank, but guess what? Stupid rock isn't leaching. It looks cool though!

That is so typical. The one time someone wants the params adjusted!!

Hehe...it's been on my list for quite some time actually, I took ceramics for several years and want to do some realistic-looking dragons and things (and buddhas) and have done some research on the aquarium-safe glazes, the only thing holding me up now is that darned expensive kiln!
Let us know how the jade works out! Seems like ones with broken off heads you could glue back together with aquarium sealant

Oh, the broken ones weren't jade--they're stone, and originally they were quite big, like 3-4 feet tall. All I have is the heads. Which... could look a little creepy, but I think it'll be neat, sort of an underwater ruin type thing.

i've got a jade budda in my giant apple snail tank. The snails love it.They crawl all over him. It's cute.Jade doesn't leech anything. He isnt very large, but he was given to me by my father in law when my husband and i started dating(some odd chinese tradition in his fathers family to show they accept you i dont know my husband explained it to me but i forgot)I'd say 7 inch tall max. He's very pretty though. All i've got is blurry pics

My Fil was mortified that i put it in there until my husband explained how much i adore my fish and snails, and he should take it as a huge compliment.lol.In all truth it wound up in there because it was the only place my daughter couldnt break it.LOL.

There fairly inexpensive in china. But the import stores want you leg for them. You can get one on ebay from china for about 5 dollars. Not exactly like mine, but still pretty, and made of jade.

hope that helps some

Oho--that's a great tip! Thank you! Yours looks great in there (well, blurry, but still great!), and I'm glad to know it goes well. Green jade is my favourite and it's a nice contrast with goldies too! The ones I have are darker and more brown. They're still nice but it would definitely be great to have a green one as well.

I can't keep up will all this precious stone data my fil keeps giving me.lol.Something about ageing jade.Lol.Oh it begins to cloud over as it ages and a browning will take place.New jade is almost a clearish green.lol.That may or may not hold water.I have no idea.I'm not from china.lol.I'm from ny.I can tell you jades pretty, and it looks nice in my tank...but thats about it.lol
