Nope this is not normal. You may want to post this in the disease/911 board and get some help. I'm sorry that your fish is not well. Hopefully, you can get the help you need for him. Welcome to KoKos!!!!!

Does it look like controlled movements or movements that he has no control over? My oranda Sosh sometimes does that as a part of his routine but it is totally controlled and he does it to entertain himself. If it looks like he doesn't have control over this, then yes it is a problem and need to be moved to the Disease Diagnosis section. If he is swimming upside down at the TOP of the tank, then it might be sign of trouble.

Hi Buddha, Welcome to Koko's! This is not at all normal, it does sound very much like your fish is unwell, I have moved your Topic to the 911 section so that you will get more help in working out what's wrong with your lad's fish. Before we can really help, we need as much information as you can give us, there is a box at the top of this page with the questions that we need to know...
Test Results for the Following:
Ammonia Level?
Nitrite Level?
Nitrate level?
Ph Level, (If possible,KH and GH and chloramines)?
Ph Level out of the Tap?
Tank size (How many Gals) and How long has it been running?
What is the name and size of the filter/s?
How often do you change the water and how much?
How many fish in the tank and their size?
What kind of water additives or conditioners?
Any medications added to the tank?
Add any new fish to the tank?
What do you feed your fish?
Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt",
bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?
Any unusual behavior like staying
at the bottom, not eating, ect..?
Good luck with your fish!

A big thank you to all your answers. The fish seems to be controled with his swimming. He seems to be entertaining himself.
Again thank you to you all.
