They are going to be adding fluoride to our water supply and I was just wondering if the stuff I use to take out the chlorine, will also take out the fluoride, as I am not sure if fluoride is safe for my fish unsure.gif

If the flouride is within safe limits for people I would think it should be at safe limits for fish. Most tap water in the US contains flouride between o.8PPM and 1.0 PPM. Up to 2 milligrams per liter is considered safe for people (FDA). Even bottled water contains flouride. Check how much will be going in. I know flouride restrictions are much stricter in Japan than in the US and doctors are anxious about levels being increased.

I also know certain enzymes can be inhibited by flouride and that may have an impact on the immunity of a fish. It's an interesting question and hope others will know more. Not sure that de-chlorinator would get rid of flouride idont.gif

Mine has it now and havent seen a problem with the fish at all, but I also add Amquel plus to the tank everytime now.

Since Koko mentioned AmQuel+, it made me think to check the Novalek/Kordon website.

First, it confirmed what I was pretty sure of - that no Kordon product is labeled for fluoride. However, they do have a series of great articles on various subjects, and they have one labeled as 'NEW' on fluoride:
http://novalek.com/kordon/articles/fluoride.html

Unfortunately, it is very short on conclusions, and mostly just links to other articles after saying they don't know either.

With most American communities living on fluoridated water (although I just thought to look and ours is not - first time I've ever lived somewhere without it), I'd have to think the risk can't be *that* large, or it would have become a bigger issue quicker. Since the articles also say that its very expensive and/or difficult to remove/reduce fluoride, there's probably not even a good approach for the cautious.
