Full Version: White Areas Turning Yellow On My Fantail
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank
Lolafish
Since I added live plants about 2-3 weeks ago, Shinobi has been developing a yellowish tint on his head, some areas of his body, and in his fins. I heard someone say it can be from eating the plants. Is that true? They all munch on the plants everyday, but Shinobi is the only one showing yellowing, probably due to being mostly white in color.

i would say he is going through a colour change my goldies eat the plants all the time and have not turned yellow.

I have seen that some of my fish get a yellow tint on the nose and fins. I have no idea why!

Well i was thinking some plants depending on the chems in them could make a goldfish get orange in them, if the plant has carotene in them it could do this. Just like certain foods do it to goldfish. biggrin.gif

unless they are carniverous famished herbivores leaving nothing but the stems oif the plants - no - I do not think it is from the plants - hoiw old are the ones changing color anyway??

I'll post a before and after pic later. It definately started after the introduction of the plants. I'm quite certain that's what's causing it. He nibbles on the plants all day, leaving nothing but stems. Lola eats about as much as he does, plant-wise. But if she has any yellowing, it's too faint to see.

Here's Shinobi on November 3rd (no plants in tank):

My ranchy has a yellowish tint on his wen, but his body stayed silvery white and his fins are clear. The ryukin in the same tank has retained his coloring with no yellowing of the white areas on his body. I think this is just goldfish genetic showing its colors, hehe.

The same thing happened with my ryukin. Her body is(was) mostly white until I added plants. Since then she has developed a yellowish tint as well. However it has subsided, I'm not sure why, it could be because I relocated her tank into an area which gets a bit more natural light. Though I understand that putting them close to a window can have it's pros and cons. >_>

Personally, I like the new shiniobi better biggrin.gif

My Sarassa comet is changing color also. I think because she gets more light. Her former completely silver underside is now on her chin and before her anal fin turning a yellow-orange color.
