I was just lloking at some of the new fish on goldfish connection and saw some orandas that ad their eyes completely grown over by wen. Poor things! How likley is this to happen to an oranda?

See, that is why I don't like wens!!!! I am scared to death of something like that happening. Some ppl say, "Well, that is just the way it is with these fish and they can still root around and find food". Other ppl "trim the wens" on their fish, but I can't see myself having to do that! Makes me shudder just thinking about it!

yeah. Usually the fish u get in chain stores will never grow wens like that. I feel sorry for them though to b bred that like, a little bit of wen is ok but when it starts growing over eyes and gills thats just horrible! I really like orandas but I wouldnt want that to happen, if it would do that I would probably trim it although it would b hard cause I have really shaky hands and i'd be nervous then so it'd be like impossible to hold the fish and scissors still, I also dont wanna hurt the fish, just cutting it probably hurts them enough laready! The ones I saw on the site u wouldnt even b able to trim, their wen is so close to their face! I know my Jackie and Zap wont grow wens liek that and Im glad, cause that would suck for the fish, a little bit of wen is cute though cuase they get the chubby face lol.

you can cut the wen..with those little baby scissors.

I used to think orandas were gross looking because those wens look like brains. Now I chuckle as they look like little afros or like mushroom people to me. But yeah, when it gets out of control, I don't think it is very pleasing to the eye.

it is very common in orandas, ranchu and lionhead it does not completely blind them but it is slightly harder for them to see. Cutting the wen should not be done as if you cut the wen in the wrong spot the fish can bleed to death. Generally speaking the wen is only cut when it grows over a fish's gills and should really only be cut by a fish vet or a person who has done it before and it is not common but can happen.

It doesn't hurt them to trim their wens? So they swim into their hand and sit patiently while it is done?
I think a lot of these breeds have gone too far. I have seen pearlscales where the gill plate is pushed forward because their body is so swollen, there is not much water getting through there. Their bodies are so compressed front to back that they have problems with their internal organs doing their natural functions. The wens overgrow their eyes and gills, their backs are so highly arched and the fish can barely move. I know these are 'high quality', but high quality to me is a HEALTHY fish that is not healthy as long as everything is perfect but healthy in general. One that is mobile and does not have problems breathing. I personally ignore the standards of the breeds that others have set. Just because some guys somewhere decided this is the way this breed should look doesn't mean I agree or am even going to consider that when I buy fish. Their health and then what I think of them is what is important.

If they have genetics for a large wen, then quite frequently! Some people actually prefer their eyes to be covered. I like when just the tops of their eyes poke out, but not so much when they are completely concealed.

I'd freak out if I had to trim a fish's wen myself... which is exactly why I don't have any goldies with wens.

No, they're not kidding. It's done. I personally would never do it, no matter how big the wen got. They can still find food through scent.
That being said, when I first started researching orandas, I was a little intimidated by their wens too..until I did more research on them.

Even if you do cut it, it will still regrow. In many cases, the eyes have gravitated to the surface - or more to the surface and when you cut away the supporting tissue the eye stalks are not properly supported. Cutting is somthing that can be done and is done often. I jsut see no point in it. The fish, with a few small modifications in environment, do just fine. Besides - a fish witha trimmed wen will never win at show, will just regrow, and you cause needless pain and risk in infection and stress.

yeah I guess ur right about that daryl. I really like orandas but the one black oranda on goldfish connection has its eyes completely grown over, u wouldnt even be able to trim it without cutting into the fish's eyes. I really think that people have gone too far with some breeds, a little wen is cute but how can a fish breathe when it grows over their gills?

My Mr.T wen did grow over part of his gills, He was just fine. I thought about cutting his wen when I had him, but never did. I think wens are neat cause not all of Orandas or Ranchus wens get huge, good example was Pharoh. He had what I call a crew cut wen, it grew like that on its own, never trimmed it. Now my fish Princess has a very big wen, it almost covers her eyes, but she has no problem finding food at all, infact shes the big pig in there
