put in the tank on the back glass. Its best to put it near a filter but not too close. If its submersible put it on an angle, if its only partly submersible then dont submerese the top part, u could set the temp to 78 or maybe 80 egrees for cycling. What brand is it? And make sure u have a thermometer.

I have not heard of heaters going outside the tank, as they heat the water to the desired temp. They would break if switched on outside (not the new Rena though!).
What heater do you have? and why is it that you want a heater if doing a fishless cycle?

Shamu beat me to it!!

well i have the one i got with my aquarium the company is aquarium systems.
http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/FishlessCycle.html thats what im fowling and they say to use a heater at 80F. so I dont know but im scared to use a heater lol. on the package it doesnt say anything except do no operate dry. do i really need to use the heater tho? is it gonna make a difference because im doing a fishless cycle?

u dont have to but it'll be faster, if u want a good one get the hagen elite submerisble. U can put them on an angle, just u cant submerese the top part. They r very accurate and I love mine.

How long until it heats up my aquarium? and is it save to leave it on all the time or am I suppose to take the heater off when I go to bed? I didnt want to make anymore holes in my hood so I took the hood off and put a plastic over the aquarium is that ok?

the heater stays on all the time and takes a couple hours to heat up usually. There are usually sections on the canopy that can be cut out for heaters and filters, I think its best if u use that cause that what they're for. I use several heaters on my tropical tanks and they all work like a charm. If u turn it off u will have flucuating temps which is not good so leave it on and check the temp daily as all heaters will wear out eventually (that can take a year or longer depending on brand). They dont usually get very hot so dont worry too much about overheating the tank, they have a built in thermostat that sense the temperature, the reason ur supposed to put a heater on an angle (if u can) is so that the heat doesnt rise directly above the thermostat cause then it'll think that the water is warmer than it actually is and the temp will be slightly lower due to that and u'll have to readjust it.
