Full Version: Another Question About Prime
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?
Nickie
I know that Prime detoxifies up to .75% of ammonia and has to be replinished every 24 hrs. My question is this:
I have been using up to 3-4 times the ammount of Prime every day as I have been letting my ammonia rise to try and get the BB's to kick in. If I use more Prime, does it detox more ammonia? I guess what I am asking is that if you Prime like the instrctuctions say, it detoxifies .75% of ammonia. If I used up to 3-4 times the ammount, does it detox more than .75%?

It probably would, if there's any left, that is. Not sure if, at any point, it becomes an issue for fish though - I'd contact the company, either on the phone or via email, before trying such an overdose.

It is safe to use up to 5x the normal amount. That is what Seachem says, anyway.

Although Seachem says 5X is safe, it drops my PH to dangerous levels if I don't buffer at the same time. So if I have to use that much (this is more likely when you have high nitrites, not high ammonia), I make sure my PH is stabilized first. Learned that the hard way.

Using 2-3X the dosage does bind more ammonia, if you believe your drop readings right afterwards.

Well then that's good smile.gif. Since these are all chemicals of one kind of another, more molecules of it will interact with more molecules of ammonia. I know you've been having problems with your cycling Nickie... and I know Prime, etc say they don't interfere with the cycle... but if you're using such large dosages, I have to wonder if maybe that's not 100% true? Just trying to think of things for ya.

Thanks Fred! I have to tell ya, I have experimented with all sorts of ways to get this tank to cycle! At first, I was doing massive wcs everyday to try and keep the ammonia way low. At that time, I was only doubling up on the Prime. Then, I was told that I need to have more ammonia in the tank for the BB's to feed on, so I have started letting my ammonia climb to 1.0,1.5, and then it gets to 2.0 over night. That is why I have been using more Prime. See, usually when I get ready for bed, the ammonia is at 1.0, which is where is needs to be for the BB's to eat. By the time I get up in the morning, it is at 2.0, which is the danger zone for my ph and my fishies. SOOOOO, what I do is add more Prime at night before I go to bed to try and bind with the ammonia to keep my fish safe until I do a wc when I get up the next morning.
Is this making any sense? I didn't think so. It makes no sense to me, either! WHYYYYY am I having so much a problem with the tank cycling?????
