Excuse me if this has already been discussed but I was in PetSmart yesterday and they had slices of orange in the Goldfish tanks and they were gobbling them up? Is that really something that is ok for Goldfish (or fish in general) to eat?

I have no idea about other species, but with goldfish, yes it is a excellent way to vary their diet. Lots of goldfish love orange (and other citrus like grapefruit) served the same way
However feed it as a treat food only, as goldfish don't digest sugar well. Don't give fruit to goldfish more than once every week or 2.
